GTX 260 1792MB unstable?

Thread Starter
Sorry about the Vague Thread title.

But I don't have all the specs on the card itself, other than its a 216 core 260 with 1792MB.

Not sure if its Factory OC'd or what.

Reason is, a friend got the card free from another friend in our gaming clan.

The one I'm getting it from, his son knows how to build PC's, but I'm a little more knowledgeable about the hardware than he is.

He's tried this card in 2 different working PC's, and with 3 different PSU's a crappy unstable 680W Aspire/Apevia unit (when I say unstable, I mean its Voltages are lower than it should be by a good .5 to .75V on 12V and one of the other voltage rails is lower than should be as well), a 750W PC Power & Cooling that seems to be stable and working for a standard 896MB 260, 9800GTX and one other card. and an OCZ GameXStream 1010W I sent them in a trade of parts.

1010W Also seems to work for the other cards.

It seems to be the card itself is unstable,

The friend that originally had it, originally had RMA'd the card, and gotten this one back.

I guess what i'm wondering, is a list of possible issues, that might be wrong.

If I get it working they said I could keep it for my own use (Extra PPD for F@H in my case), but if it doesn't work its a free paper weight.

Some of the symptoms seem to be random BSOD's and system Freezes, even when just browsing the web sometimes (normally I'd suspect Drivers of this problem, but suspect the lock ups with overheating). and they tried 3 or 4 different versions of drivers with similar results.

The only things I can think of, would be if its Factory OC'd if its not stable with the OC, or possibly maybe Voltage is too high or not high enough.

but could it also be that its just bad RAM chips or something?

If its something that would involve Baking a card, not sure if I would even bother with trying that then.

But once I get it, I'm going to try messing with the clocks if it is Factory OC'd, and lower/increase voltage see if thats an issue.

Maybe underclock it and see what happens?

but was just trying to get an idea of possible problems that would be causing the card to have this sort of behavior.

Since I've Never owned a card that has failed on me before, aside from a 6800GT I bought from newegg once that was DOA, and returned it and got a Factory OC'd 6600GT instead.

This would be a first time experience for myself, trying to diagnose and possibly fix an unstable video card.

well you pretty much have it figured out. The card could be simply dying, or an unstable overclock. get msi afterburner and play around with the settings a little. see what works. if all else fails, really do try baking it. the method saved my bro's dead bfg 8800gt smile.gif

and if that fails.... well theres not much u can do. u did pretty much all you could do. smash it with a hammer. idk. be creative. it dont work no more.

edit: your friend rma'd an old card? and it arrived like this? could be a crappy refurb, just sayin

also this page might help: http://www.playtool.com/pages/artifacts/artifacts.html

It's because your post is poorly formatted and, at first glance, is a wall of text. Next time if you expect replies at least try to make it look legible.

Thank you for that oh so unhelpful and Arrogant Response. mad.gif

Apparently reading a couple/few Paragraphs of text is too much to read for kids these days.

Here, this might be easier on the eyes?

I'll be sure and leave out any pertinent information and/or details that might be helpful for others to reply to in any future posts here if you'd like?

I have to deal with Posts like that from people who have practically no Experience with Computers on other Forums I've been on and it frustrates the hell out of me, when they put a vague posting with absolutely no info to even base a reply on. So sorry for trying to provide some background info and details that might help. rolleyes.gif

up voltage to try and get it stable, down clock the card and if neither of those work turn on the oven. thats the best i can offer you, seems you have done all the hard work yourself.

First downclock to see if stability is the issue, if not, you have bigger problems. Try baking after that.

You moaned about not getting responses, I provide a little insight and you're now upset. There's nothing wrong with posting pertinent information so long as it's set in a fashion that is easy to pick up and read.

Your "fix" is an even bigger wall of text. If you feel offended by my post you may want to re-read it, as I was simply providing some constructive criticism to help you get a response.

Yeah i would downclock it, and if that doesnt work its bake time.
strip the card down to the pcb.
Place it on 4 balls of aluminium foil so its raised off the tray.
stick it in the oven 220-250c for 6-10mins.
Let it cool then rebuild and try it.
