GTX 260 1792MB unstable? - Page 2

Thread Starter
Forgot about this thread, But an Update on the Card.

A few weeks ago, I finally started to build my brothers "newer" though still outdated PC (Socket 775 Celeron Dual Core 2.4GHz, 2GB DDR2 800MHz, 500GB WD Green Series HDD, Antec Neo Eco 400W, etc)

Anyways, I Popped in the GTX 260 to test it out using that system with Windows 7 32-bit.

Apparently the previous Owners didn't test thoroughly with the card, either something was awry with his Corsair 750W PSU, or he tested it on the Crap Apevia 680W unit that was already 4 or 5 years old.

Or there was some sort of compatibility issue with his Board/System and the card.

But I was able to boot PC on first try successfully. Installed Win7 Fine, ran some software, never had any problems, temps were fine, voltages fine, etc.

Then I Loaded up some goodies like MSI Kombustor, X3: Reunion Rolling Demo, Some of the Unigen Benchmarks, etc.

Got the card nice and toasty running those things, and pushing it on stock clocks.

never skipped a beat, no artifacting, temps stayed with in norm, etc. no BSOD's or Hard locks, reboots or ANYTHING.

All of that on a dinky 400W PSU (albeit it was an Antec of course with a solid 30A Rail, but still vs the 2 He supposedly tested it on, including the Corsair 750W which should of handled it fine unless something was wrong with it)

So in the end, I got a free Perfectly fine running Card.

Now that its in his PC, I had a hell of a time getting it installed, and wires routed around it, thinking I'm just going to leave it in there now, and give it to my brother, instead of installing the 1GB 4870 I was going to install in there, GPU wise, the 260 is only a step down from the 4870, so not too much lost in performance. And Since the Mobo is a 3 Way Crossfire board, running a 2nd or 3rd 4870 in there wouldn't be wise on that 400W PSU anyways. Aside from the Case, CPU and PSU, all the other parts are used or hand me downs anyways, so it should do him just fine, his old PC is an Athlon XP 2800+, and a Geforce 6600GT on WinXP so should be a nice jump in performance LOL.
