How to put this card into monitor mode, is it possible

Thread Starter
I was wondering if i could put this card into monitor mode - Atheros AR5B97 Wireless Network Adapter, it is in the following laptop - Gateway NV5942u

If you wonder why, I am a Computer Science Student in college trying to learn how to be able to scan networks for packets to crack the WEP keys, FOR INSTRUCTIONAL purposes only.

Or if someone could explain the whole process to me that would be great.

Thanx in advance, Crazymonkey

EDIT: lloks like i'll be installing virtual linux, which distribution should i use?

Better yet, try their forum.

What your looking for is promiscuous mode. Your card's chip set has to support the feature and as for tuning it on, you'll have to follow the guides outlined by the aircrack-ng how-to's for your card. In wireshark there is a feature in the preferences that will allow you to turn it on, but that's only for packet capturing on a hub.
