Spray Painting Radiator

Thread Starter
I bought a radiator about a month ago from sidewinder and the one I got was defected. I bought a couple things but that's the only one which came bad. I called them and they said I must email them to RMA, took a couple days and got a reply then said ship it. I then ask if they could give me a shipping label as it wasn't my fault and they told me they would get back to me and then never replied again. It's been about 10 days and still nothing, messaged them about 5 times now and no emails. Was thinking to forget the RMA and just paint the damaged part myself, would it be a good idea to give this some primer and use a spray paint can to paint the radiator?

you can just go straight over it with paint as its not going to be knocked once in, unless you got primer laying around i wouldn't bother but like my good old posting friend Bal3wolf fill it with water let it sit for 24 hrs. and check for leaks if no leaks and you CBA RMA'in it then go ahead paint it whatever colour you want

Hell, I'm about to strip and repaint my radiator white! Go for it. Just make sure to cover the fins with tape, you don't want to paint them as it could affect the radiator's performance.

Until it oxidizes. I suppose if one were so inclined they could put some clearcoat over it though...

In any case, it'd just be the ends that are copper (or brass, I suppose). The sides are probably just aluminum.

in painting some rads, I found either stripping off old paint-or-sanding down the paint-no paint junction looks a bit better than just spraypainting over right away. leak testing sounds like a good idea.

I have some white black ice gtx 480s, but microman i agree, the bare metal look was pretty cool.

Yes, tape over or place a piece of cardboard over the fins and tubes prior to painting.

You can paint the fins and tubes, however, use a flat based paint that will attach to metal. This will help protect the fins and tubes from outside corrosion and keep it clean. Gloss paints on the fins and tubes reduce the cooling transfer to the air.

I just did mine and got excellent results. Here's what I did:

a) Sanded the radiator down - not to bare metal but so that all of the original black paint was scuffed up

b) Covered fins with Masking tape

c) Covered threaded G 1/4 ports

d) Spray painted about 5 coats of matte white paint

e) Removed everything and let dry 2 hours.

f) Installed back into my 800D, looks sexy!
