MSI 870A-G54 not working?!

Thread Starter
Hello,

I installed an aftermarket northbridge cooler on my motherboard (870A-G54) a while back and while I was moving my computer (the computer was on) I didn't notice it came loose. Soon after I was finished moving my computer, it shut down and I had no idea why. I could however smell something burning near my case. I ripped open the side panel and only then did I find the northbridge cooler was loose. I gave it time to cool and made sure everything was connected properly and refit the cooler. Although the computer does turn on (fans spin, mobo lights come on, HDD spins, etc), it doesn't post, as in the screen stays black indefinitely. What the hell is wrong? Is the northbridge fried? Do I need to RMA my board? Is there a test I can do to make sure its not the motherboard but something else? Am I even legible to RMA my board if I need to or am I ****ed?

TL;DR
Northbridge cooler came loose and overheated, computer doesn't post, what do?

I'm betting it's probably your mosfets.
With all your overclocking and overvolting on an MSI 4+1 power phase (it's dangerous enough at stock, and even more dangerous with a tower cooler; to top it off, you're very overclocked and overvolted) you probably had a VRM failure.
Even if it wasn't a VRM failure, I recommend replacing the board immediately with something else. How "loose" was the northbridge cooler? Actually off it or only slightly?

Off!? Okay, that probably could've killed it if the exposure was too much. The northbridge is the link to the PCI-E lanes and the graphics card... so a black screen may be kind of a given here.

stop blaming 4+1.

It is perfectly safe at stock, and can easily handle voltages under 1.5 on quads.

Now to the actual problem, You probably fried the north bridge. MSI is pretty lax about RMAs, so they will probably replace it, just don't tell them you installed an AM cooler.

Yeah... Damn thats what I though :c My graphics card is probably unaffected though right?

This is the reason I'm so worried about people on 4+1 power phases:

This was only overclocking my 1075t to 4.2 @ 1.43v If you do some research you will see many posts about the board dying after overclocking with higher voltage.
This guy was running the 1075T heavily overclocked on a board with unheatsinked 4+1 power phase (4.2 at a lesser 1.43V). This person posted this only 3 hours ago.

Even at stock situations many 4+1 phases have trouble actually supplying the power in the first place to such TDP-heavy processors. There are often many 6+2/8+1/8+2 power phase boards for the same price anyway.

Even then, on 125W CPUs even not-so-heavily overclocked, I have seen 3 890GX boards from MSI (heatsinked 4+1) blow up on users now. Three. I'm just concerned about the safety of the users here.

TDP is not everything.

There are VERY few X6's that will use 125w at stock 100% load. 125w is the MAX that it can be, most of them are probably in the 100w range.

voltage is not everything. # of cores also affects power draw/VRM stress. a 125w X6 will be A LOT more stressful than a 125w x4.

The only incidents that i have seen involve X6's being highly overclocked on 4+1 boards. If you can show me one where there was a problem at stock, i will be impressed.

10ish people != representative of an entire user base.

For reference i run a 95w X4 (stock speed ofc) on a 3+1 phase board (MSI), been running fine for 1 year non-stop.
