I believe when Ivy bridge goes 22nm, you wont need anything more then air cooling unless your doing extreme overclocking. Two reasons make me think that. The architecture is smaller and the socket is bigger(2011) to give it more room to spread out what heat it produces. That's just what I think but we shall see.

showing some proof - that Air cooling its pretty much already close to Water... old picture

that is why I don't need to go water - unless i want to go extreme on overclocking
*Obviously I had my air conditioner turned on, its too hot where I live I need the AC.

Now imagine this, that is on Puerto Rico(avg 90F always)... what if I lived up in the States, Canada, or some place else etc... on an area which gets snow or has much lower ambients... obviously it would have been much lower temps than what I got on just only Air.

But this also shows we have reached the limit - End of Golden Age

How is air cooling "close to water" unless you count all in one closed loop units? There's a very significant drop in temps with a custom loop compared to normal air cooling.

hmm Have you seen temps for other people who are using these settings, they most get around 54c - 60c(on a average good Air cooling) & I'm getting only 46c

See the difference + I live in Puerto Rico allot warmer than those guys.

Water is not that far from me (I've seen 44c on water on similar settings for a 965) - unless the person has some great ambient temps - which will indeed lower more his water temps.. same thing if i lived on a place with lower ambient temps i would go much lower as well.

I think he should've said high end air is close to low end "custom" loops. A swiftech 2x120 rad, with a midrange pump and block, won't be much better, if at all, compared to a SA or D14. Remember, "custom" does not necessarily imply high end.

For non-hardcore enthusiasts, I believe water does not return a favourable investment vs benefit, especially on AMD chips. A $300 investment nets you a mere 10% in fps improvement or encoding performance.

AIO water loops pretty much always trails high end air, especialy db for db.

Don't forget the set it and forget it simplicity of high end air. I don't want to worry about changing my water, keeping the water growth and contaminant free, corrosion, spills etc.

In my opinion high end air is the way to go unless you really must have that extra 500 MHz overclock.

Water is will always have it's niche users. I for one will never want to hear a GPU fan on load ever again.
