But what if I like a clutch and gear-shift? Can i get an electric motor tied to a modified manual transmission--for 'ol days sake?

I was under the impression electric motors did not use multiple gears, so unless you want a pressable dead petal, a clutch would be useless.

And using electricity to power cars is just plain dumb. It seems like companies are just jumping on the bandwagon for customers. Why wait to charge something for double digit hours just to drive it for 2-3? And it seems like people who claim electric cars are "green" conveniently forget that a great deal of our electricity is created by - yep - fossil fuels.

Whatever happened to hydrogen as the next new fuel source? Greyhounds have been using hydrogen cells for years now, and Honda had that FCX Clarity on Top Gear (Brit. vers.) Not only is hydrogen nearly unlimited, but you put your source materials back in the earth (water, if that was unclear).

I like the sound and feel of gasoline powerhouses too but I think I could give some of that (powerful mp3 player? ) for a machine that could be silent on demand and slam me back in my seat at almost any speed as well as actually be green. I think there are interim steps required before fuel cell and other hydrogen cars can become a realistic substitute.

Electricity production and storage needs to evolve further but has certainly accelerated considerably in the past decade. If anyone doubts that electric cars can be fun, or that GM and likely the entire oil based automotive industry initially squelched and buried technology watch "

" and pay attention to how much owners loved them and how a major improvement in batteries was bought out and scrapped by an oil company.

I think batteries are the WRONG way to go. They produce more damage in production then the car will 'not cause' in its life time.

hydrogen on the other hand is every where. When burn it only creates water and when produced in large amounts can be cheaper then gas.

its more planet saving then the electrical car with out the restrictions.



The irony is that h20 is more of a green house gas then CO2...

No company killed the electric car. We did. Electric cars are just not practical. Alot of people who buy electric cars dont buy them again. A lot of the people that you see on all these videos are green freaks. The few that do.

I dont even drive. here in NYC its easier and quicker to just bike every where i need to go. So im the greenest of them all and i dont even try.

That is so far from the truth I almost fell off my chair

Some things you should know:

Lithium batteries used in electric cars are much cleaner and use less power to manufacture then fuel derived from crude oil. Lithium batteries are also 100% recyclable.

The HUGE amount of electricity used in the oil refinery alone far outweighs the amount used to manufacture an EV's lithium based battery pack.

And then consider that while driving a gas powered vehicle, you're also poluting, and that every gallon of gas you over the lifespan of your gas vehicle takes takes approx 15kWh of electricity to produce. And the majority of that 15kWh of electricity comes coal power stations

Now before you suggest that you have to continually recharge an electric car and that will also use electricity - please understand that it will still use less electricity per mile.

eg. The US Corporate Average for vehicles is 23miles per gallon, and that gallon needs 15kWh of electricity to produce. The average electric car can travel over 50miles on that same 15kWh of power. That is over twice the distance using the same amount of electricity

To summarise, the batteries are cleaner to manufacture and an EV using those batteries will travel on average twice as far using the same amount of electricity as a gas car does.

Many electric car conversions use manual transmissions. They're practically a requirement in popular DC motor conversions, but a lot less important in considerably more expensive AC motor conversions.

The thing with electric cars that their electric motors have so much torque that is instantly available that you don't really need a gearbox.

Imagine the push at 2000rpm from the 550nm of torque that a 2010 Camaro SS can deliver - even a cheap 11" DC motor can provide 550nm of torque with the right batteries pack - the difference is it can deliver it immediately, as soon as the throttle is pressed and wothout any rpm delay
