applying thermal paste to vram on gtx280?

hey all, recently my gpu temps have been very hot, talking 50 degrees idle, 87ish load. Anyway I was wondering if I could get some advice on advice on something involving the gtx280 stock coolers.

The thermal pads, or tape or whatever was on there covering the ram was completely shot so I just took it all off. Ive considered applying some of the basic thermal paste that came with my CPU that I never used, I believe its coolermaster, comes in a little red tube. I also have as5 but ive been reading that using that on VRAM is really dangerous so thats a no go as I really don't feel like frying my cards.

Last bit of my question, Is there a GAP between the stock gtx280 coolers and the Ram? I really can't tell as it's all covered up and ive looked all across the net for this info and found nothing. If there isnt im considering distributing a thin layer of paste on the ram and be done with it, as im really confused on what thermal pads I should use.

Any gtx280 owners or those with experience with the 200 series could help me, id jump for joy seriously.

*Mods* if this is in the wrong area it would be great if you could just move it to the correct area, this seemed like a good place to put it tho.

I think it's gotta be a non-conductive TIM if you're using it on RAM.

awesome thanks for the fast responses, it's non conductive as far I know, but not sure how great the stuff is as its just the generic thermal paste my i7 came with.

I have as5, and that stuff is great but it's slightly capactive ive been tolled.

I wouldn't use AS5. It's conductive and if it hits your PCB, your card is as good as dead.

Also, if there's a gap between the ram and the heatsink, you have to use thermal pads. The old 8800GTS series happened to be the same.

THIS is better than AS-5 and it's proven to have the same conductivity as X23. biggrin.gif

so does anyone know for sure if theres a gap? between the heatsink and vram.

On almost all cards theirs a gap how thick were the pads when you took them off that should tell you.

Get a high performance pad DON'T use thermal paste since the space is to great for the paste to be effective.

AS5 is not conductive, it is capacitive. There is a difference.
