I'm Probably /looking at a new motherboard, right?

Ok, so recently when I was playing games, the image would cut out (Monitor would go black/standby mode) and I would have to hit the reset button.

Image would come up, things would run normally.

For some odd reason, I could play games longer if the GPU fan was manually cranked to a high setting. I thought My issue was my trusty old 4870x2, so I replaced it with a new 6950.

There are still random crashes. No blue screen, no windows error reporting, only the occasional chkdsk on startup.

It seems to only crash when there is a 3D program running. It will even do it during Minecraft.

Bios is set to all defaults.
Two complete passes of Memtest with no errors.

I have an idea that it could be the OS that is acting up, so I am reinstalling that tomorrow.

If that doesn't do it, does that pretty much narrow it down to the board?

or could I have a CPU problem brewing?

What are your opinions?

And If I have to replace the board, what do you recommend?

Thanks guys!

So the problem seems be be happening whenever your GPU draws a lot of power which makes me wonder about the PSU. Does it crash when you run CPU intensive programs (ex. prim95)?

It shouldn't be PSU. When the graphics fail, I can usually control what happens for a little while longer, the it crashes totally. If I had drop across 12v, the rest of the computer would go with it.

I'm going to try OS today and see what happens.

But without fail, it will post and boot linux from a CD successfully every time. So OS looks likely.
