I was actually content with the ending. I can't see them making more out of it. Then again, they did the same (unnecessarily) with FFVII and Advent Children. Yet there is STILL a major gap in the story for that game that demands either a sequel or a remake. Gah!

Hmm. I'm still only about 10 hours into FF13, but it is without question the WORST of the modern FFs (by modern, I mean FF7 and above...the PS era). I hear it gets better (after another 20 hours! ), but I just can't believe they're making a sequel to this.

This is certainly a rehash from many, many other people; but my primary complaints about FF13 are:

1. Most linear RPG I think I have ever played. And I've been playing RPGs since before many of you were born. (Started around 1982, I would say...Ultima I and Wizardry I on an Apple ][, that era.)

2. Combat system is just not good. Let me control my party members, dammit!!!

3. Constant...CONSTANT...shifting of party members is very disrupting. I can't get a "flow" going, I have no sense of identity of how I want to play the game because they keep changing the skills I have (the characters and their developed roles) underneath me with no warning.

4. The storytelling is just asinine. Not the story mind you, it's just as weird and crazy as any FF story. No, I mean the storytelling. If you don't stop and read the Datalog every time it blinks an alert, there's just no way of knowing what's really going on. That's just bad, bad, bad.

5. I want to punch Hope in the face. Hard. FF12 finally got rid of the whiny angst ridden teenage boy that has infested FF since FF7, and they bring it back in FF13 with Hope. *PUNCH* *PUNCH* DIE!!!! *PUNCH*

Quit letting nostalgia get the best of you. I loved the past FF as much as anyone, but FF13 was a breath of fresh air and I loved it.
You're just nuts if you think FF13's battle system is an improvement over the traditional ATB system.

Personally I thought FF12's system was the pinnacle. It was sort of MMO-like, but it also had the Gambit system (which was apparently a good idea, since Dragon Age essentially copiped and improved on it) and could be configured to play more like a traditional ATB system if the player preferred. I know a lot of folks disagree...but I don't see why, because ATB-like play was just a few button clicks away.

Lightning, Snow, and the girl with the lance. Just press X until you're low on health, swap over to healing, spam X more, and then rinse/repeat. No boss or enemy stands a chance.
Well...you can play that way, but even only a few hours in I'm figuring out that that's a bad idea. If you mix it up and throw in at least a Saboteur role, some fights go a lot easier and faster. Synergist obviously helps some too.

But my problem is having to set up those roles as Paradigms in the first place. If Vanille knows how to casr a Cure spell, then let me cast the dang Cure spell!!! Why do I have to switch everyone to a different role?

Every RPG has turn based systems. The current trend is to make it look like there are no turns, with the just attacking, or following a script/Gambit, or whatever unless given direct orders otherwise...but that's still turn based. Even FF13 is turn based...I'm not sure why we're arguing that it's not...

Finally, someone else who gets FF12! Hooray! I swear, sometimes it seems like I'm the only one who recognizes that game as the phenomenal game that it is.

Oh yeah, you role changing is necessary for some fights especially boss ones. But you still spam X.
So - spam X, R1, spam X, R1.

Thank you again. Stupid system is stupid.
It's even worse when they don't do what you want them to do.
One of the worst boss fights in the game (and the longest for like 30 minutes) has you constantly switching over to heal. And if Hope doesn't heal you in time, and you can't heal yourself because you HAVE to kill the boss otherwise your time runs out, you will have to die no matter what you do. It's the single most annoying thing I've seen in a game to repeat a 30 minute boss battle 20 times over. And trust me, it wasn't because of X spam because I tried every god damn method of playing the game possible.

don't think anyone is arguing that but the point is that the "real-time" system just doesn't work. If you're going to do turn based battles: it's got to be the classic-esque at least where the player has total control or bust. That's not out of nostalgia either.

I didn't enjoy FF12's story, characters, settings, and even music. The gameplay was fantastic though.
Though - to learn how to wear pants seriously pissed me off.

Just want to say that while FFX-2's premise was cheesy as hell, the gameplay and even some of the story was good. The dressphere system is basically a job system that is flexible in that it allows you to switch jobs mid-battle. This made for lots of options and lots of possible strategies during battles. I didn't even mind the odd way of tackling "missions" (though getting 100% in everything was a *****).

I will hate that game forever because of the 100%. I got 3/4 through the game, and one of the missions glitched out and prevented me for getting 100% so I gave up on the game. It's the only FF game I haven't completed.

Agree, my favorite way is actually the BioWare way: let it run in "real time" until I decide to pause the action and micromanage my tactics.

Yeah, that was kind of a flaky upgrade system, I admit. By the end, I had the entire board unlocked for every character anyway, so there was zero character differantiation. I guess I had the same problem with FFX though.

I started out hating X-2, probably because it wasn't FFX (which I loved). But about mid-way through I realized that it was actually a very free-roaming, non-linear game. So my opinion changed once I accepted it for what it was.

Not sure I like the idea of "changing jobs" mid-fight, though. It's kind of the same issue with Paradigms...so what, the cool stuff I knew a minute ago is somehow "lost" or "forgotten"? Doesn't jive with me conceptually, nor from a game design perspective. Maybe I'm just too old-school...in AD&D / Baldur's Gate / etc., you didn't get to switch your fighter to a mage mid-fight...you had to pick the people/classes that were in your party before you ever left town to go into the dungeon!

Wow...I don't think I've ever gotten 100% on any game, ever. Partially because it's usually a PITA, and partially because it's nigh impossible to do without using a FAQ or hint book to show you where everything is. I would rather move on to a shiny new game!

I'll never touch another FF13-related game again. FF13 was the only FF game in the numbered series that I can say that about...sadly.

I felt FF13's story ended just fine, now they are just going to mess it up with a direct sequel. But seeing Lightning in that armor and the new villain at the end of the trailer gives me some hope that this will be good. Maybe it's because this is the first time I completed an FF game, I don't mind the battle system at all. It feels like an tweaked and improved version of Last Remnant's system. The only thing I hope they will add is the ability to have more than 1 party on the field at once. Having 5 unions in Last Remnant was great, with the paradign shift system it should make the battles playable.

*PUNCH*

Marry me vulcan

My feelings EXACTLY

I feel the same way...I bored through the first 2 disks but now it's just a matter of going from A to B on the minimap using the SAME tactics EVERYtime. There's no gameplay to it, just mash X and occasionally switch roles to get your health back. I hated the combat system.

FF12 had the BEST combat system ever. I could program my characters to do what I wanted but I could still step in if I needed to to take control. Battle was MUCH MUCH MUCH faster paced then what's currently in FF13.

I honestly couldn't bear the bordem of playing FFXIII anymore and gave up somewhere in disk 2. Plus I wanted to shoot hope in the face over....and over....and over....
