Hmm. I'm still only about 10 hours into FF13, but it is without question the WORST of the modern FFs (by modern, I mean FF7 and above...the PS era). I hear it gets better (after another 20 hours!
), but I just can't believe they're making a sequel to this.
This is certainly a rehash from many, many other people; but my primary complaints about FF13 are:
1. Most linear RPG I think I have ever played. And I've been playing RPGs since before many of you were born. (Started around 1982, I would say...Ultima I and Wizardry I on an Apple ][, that era.)
2. Combat system is just not good. Let me control my party members, dammit!!!
...shifting of party members is very disrupting. I can't get a "flow" going, I have no sense of identity of how I
want to play the game because they keep changing the skills I have (the characters and their developed roles) underneath me with no warning.
4. The storytelling is just asinine. Not the story
mind you, it's just as weird and crazy as any FF story. No, I mean the storytelling.
If you don't stop and read the Datalog every time it blinks an alert, there's just no way of knowing what's really going on. That's just bad, bad, bad.
5. I want to punch Hope in the face. Hard. FF12 finally got rid of the whiny angst ridden teenage boy that has infested FF since FF7, and they bring it back in FF13 with Hope. *PUNCH* *PUNCH* DIE!!!! *PUNCH*

Quit letting nostalgia get the best of you. I loved the past FF as much as anyone, but FF13 was a breath of fresh air and I loved it.
You're just nuts if you think FF13's battle system is an improvement over the traditional ATB system.
Personally I thought FF12's system was the pinnacle. It was sort of MMO-like, but it also had the Gambit system (which was apparently a good idea, since Dragon Age essentially copiped and improved on it) and could be configured to play more like a traditional ATB system if the player preferred. I know a lot of folks disagree...but I don't see why, because ATB-like play was just a few button clicks away.

Lightning, Snow, and the girl with the lance. Just press X until you're low on health, swap over to healing, spam X more, and then rinse/repeat. No boss or enemy stands a chance.
Well...you can play that way, but even only a few hours in I'm figuring out that that's a bad idea. If you mix it up and throw in at least a Saboteur role, some fights go a lot easier and faster. Synergist obviously helps some too.
But my problem is having to set up those roles as Paradigms in the first place. If Vanille knows how to casr a Cure spell, then let me cast the dang Cure spell!!!
Why do I have to switch everyone
to a different role?

Every RPG has turn based systems. The current trend is to make it look like there are no turns, with the just attacking, or following a script/Gambit, or whatever unless given direct orders otherwise...but that's still turn based. Even FF13 is turn based...I'm not sure why we're arguing that it's not...

Finally, someone else who gets FF12! Hooray! I swear, sometimes it seems like I'm the only one who recognizes that game as the phenomenal game that it is.
