Upgrade CPU = more fps? - Page 2

That's more than enough. XD I have a Scythe Mugen 2 on mine and your cooler is better than mine.

Just download AMD Overdrive, set the core multiplier to x18 and set the core voltage to 1.45v and you'll be golden.

Ok Ive got an oc of 3.6gz goin now which seemed to help a little. I also messed around ocing my 580 to 1.138 voltage at 920mhz core but this seems useless. I ran benches of crysis and metro with stock clocks and then the oc numbers and at most I got a 2 fps increase. Is this to be expected or am I bottlenecked?

Still going to bottleneck in some games.

2 fps from the GPU overclock, CPU overclock, or both? Try a different benchmark. Crysis and Metro are both super GPU bound and improve small amounts from overclocking anything.

Ok then that explains it. I was referring to the gpu overclock. I didnt bench anything before the cpu overclock to compare because im a dumbass so the benches were at stock and oc clocks of the gpu (after the cpu was oc'ed)

I think I am going to have to disagree that an OC on that chip will remove any bottleneck, when I had my PII 940 OC'd to 3.7ghz with my 5870 my computer wasnt performing as well as I would have liked in games and certainly wasnt benching to the level I thought it would.

Then when I was gifted this chip and mobo and ran my I7 up to 4ghz my performance in games and benches went up a decent amount. Isnt the 580 a higher end GPU than my 5870? I would think that the PII 940 even at 3.7ghz would be a decent bottleneck.

You have two choices:

1.) Buy a second GTX 580 (if your motherboard accepts SLi)

2.) Sell your rig (except for the GTX 580) and build a 2500k rig which will enhance your computing experience beyond gaming.

Would an upgrade say to a 2500k increase gaming performance?

1080 res
Get that 940 up to 3.4 and you should be fine.

There will be an increase of performance if you upgrade to a 2500k, but it's not worth the money spent to be honest.

The only benefit would be to have a more up to date system. The higher resolution you go or details wise, the more GPU dependent the performance will be.

If you absolutely want an upgrade, wait a few months for Bulldozer and compare performances. But as of right now I can't justify you spending $400+ for a mobo/CPU/RAM upgrade.

To give you an idea, I went from a Phenom II X4 955 BE at 3.2ghz to a Xeon X3440 OC'd to 3.8ghz, and I see no performance difference in MOST games. There are a few that there is an improvement but only a very select few.

What was your minimum FPS increase?

Also, Crysis is not very CPU clock speed dependent and Metro 2033 isn't dependent on CPU clock speed at all.

...a better CPU won't help with Metro either.

It depends on the game. Do you call a 50% increase in FPS not worth it in Starcraft?

Or WoW?:

Most games are not like this...but for those that are CPU bound-they get a HUGE kick from Sandy.

Those benches don't specify conditions. The frames don't look high, but you know how relevant a 1024x768 benchmark would be.
