help 955 prime95 fail on stock

Thread Starter
so i've overclocked my cpu to 3.8ghz before on multiplier alone 200x19. Then I decided to use my OC genie which gave me the same results but at 240x16. Recently i've been experiencing a lot of weird mishaps and BSODs on my comp and i thought my hdd was crapping out.

did memtest86 and seatools and both are clean. Someone from this forum suggested doing prime95. I thought it wouldn't hurt running it again so I did. Almost automatically my 3rd or 4th core would fail. so I gave it more voltage. OC genie i think kept the voltage at stock. I raised it to 1.4v. it took longer but eventually I got another error. I decided to change back to my old oc i knew worked (200x19). That got even further but still failed. I decided to just default my entire setup and run prime95. My 3rd core just received an error right now. Is my cpu damaged?

I've never given the chip more then 1.55v which wasn't for even more then an hr or 2 because I didn't like the temps I was getting. My cpu was on 1.4v when I had my 200x19 config. Can someone help me out? I'm scared my cpu is busted and I've only gotten it for a little over a month. warranty is void as well since I've overclocked :\\

its not busted, after a while CPU's need more core voltage, its completely normal

give it a bit more than 1.4.

I dont understand, your thread title suggests it fails p95 on stock 3.4, but your post suggests you are saying it fails on a 3.8 overclock that used to be stable.... which is the case?

correct but i set my bios to default and ran prime95 again which resulted in another fail on the third core on stock speeds and voltage

Perhaps your failure is a sign of bios issues. Check your bios version make sure it is up to date.

how high were your temps?

Running prime95 right now my own voltage floats between 1.44 and 1.48 (Vcore is set to auto in my bios). The 955 is basically the same chip as i understand it.

my max temps are 38C with 27C on idle for stock settings. For 3.8ghz on 1.4v it was 32C Idle and 45C on load. I just ran prime95 last night before i went to bed. woke up to find that my first and third cores failed before it could even pass the first test. Core 3 failed right away apparent... (0 minutes) 1st core failed in 2mins. The fact that the third core keeps failing scares me even more. I just got this damn cpu.. sigh

I don't think I need to update my bios. The NF980 were made for the phenom II's pretty much. The only bios update I would need would be for a hexacore. Kinda scared of flashing bios unless i absolutely need to

BIOS updates can do much more than just add CPU support.. there are something like 17 different BIOS for my mobo, and they all support the exact same family of CPUs.
