FAH Machine ????

I have a budget!biggrin.gif

I spend about 3k on a new PC at the beginning of every odd year. The even years are controlled by my wife who spends 3k on clothes, makeup, and whatever else ladies waste money on:headscrat. This is the agreement and compromise of marriage. Well, it is the odd year of 2011, and I must take part in this horrible agreement. As sad as this might make me to spend 3k on a new PC, I feel that I must build me a new kick ass PC (even if I don’t need it) in the name of Love! I’m so distraught right now. I hope you all can understand the pain that I am going through.wink.gif

I currently already have a lot of tech in my house: I have the Sig build which is my main PC, I have 3 HTPC’s, Two 775 systems that are folding proteins, Two gaming machines for my boys, Two Laptops, A Large WHS, an AMD on a bench set up that I use to create virtual Labs and experiments for school. The WHS and one of the HTPC’s are the oldest computers in the house at 4years.

So I am going to build a folding rig. biggrin.gif:D

Not sure on what, where, how, or why, but I am going to do It and I do know when! I have 2 weeks before can make the purchase (1st of the month money!) I really would like some kind of core I7 system with 4 video cards. I have also wanted to purchase the Corsair 800D or 700; I would like to try my hand at liquid cooling. Liquid is not a must, nor is the case a necessity either. I’m just laying out my thoughts on this.

Questions that I want to ask that will help me define what I will be buying are as follows.

I really would like 4 Video cards and a core I7. Is this a logical concept or is there a more efficient method available?

Do I need to go for the biggest video cards?

What about the liquid cooling? I really want to experiment some with this. Would this be the best project to learn liquid on?

Could you some of you guys with the bigger folding machines post a past link up to a post describing your machine, so I can view it?

I will be making a detailed build page for this project from conception to build to tweak to PPD, and completion which will be including pictures made with my Nikon D70 and video’s with my Flip Mino Ultra HD.

I ultimately would like to have the Corsair 800D, i7, 4Video Cards, Water cooling system, along with some accessories I already have here at home. However I am game to entertain almost every Idea, I know this thread is going to be long as well as the Build Thread will be long.

I truly plan on taking my time on this build and documenting everything of the Folding Machine. I also want to name the project as well. So if you have some great thoughts on a name let me know.

Now I am going lay down for a few hours. I will be back on later this evening, for some more discussion.

Not sure, I would say a new SB board & do Bigadv. But the problem is, since you have to dedicate one core to your GPU's. Having 3 Cores doing Bigadv would be pointless. So maybe a 1156 board with an i3 or something. Look at AMD_SLI_GURU's thread for some ideas. He has a pretty nice farm going.

GTS 450's aren't far behind the 460, use one less 6-pin, and run fine on the stock coolers. A cheap Athlon II would power four 450's just fine, it would be better to just build a bare-bones i7 system (something just for -bigadv) then try to fold AND feed 4 GPU's).

790/890FX-GD70 are great for folding on multiple video cards (890FX could hold 5 single-slot 450's). A dedicated i7 system for -bigadv. My opinion haha.

Exactly, so I can just keep my sig rig and build an all out toy as well.

If I were you, I'd wait until March/April when Bulldozer comes out.
It's supposed to be above 1366 by a decent amount and will have up to 8 cores for desktops. The price will probably be reasonable.

For F@H, get an AM3+ motherboard and tri-sli GTX 460 1GB's since they run quite cool and still get awesome PPD.

The price difference from a GTS 450 to a GTX 460 is about $20-$30 for the cheeper models. The diference in points is about 3k Points per day (PPD). As far as cpu/mb is hard to go with sandy bridge if you want a nice mb with room for 4 cards.
