Suggestions about PC update

Thread Starter
Hello everybody. I've been thinking for a while to update my computer hardware. I'm currently running on an E6750, Gigabyte P31-DS3L, 4GB DDR2 and I recently bought a GTX460, while my Patriot SSD keeps rocking. Of course, I'd like to change my CPU, Motherboard and, therefore, RAM. The budget should stay around 300€ (~400$), but I can go over this limit, if still in the range of another 50€.

I only have some vague ideas on the processor, an i5 2400 LGA1155, but I'm still unsure whether to go for an i7 or save some money with an i5: this one in particular looks pretty good, for it runs at about 3GHz and has 4 cores, but the price of 1155 motherboards worries me.

RAM is not a problem actually, as I can buy a 4GB OCZ kit at about 40€ (53$) or even less.

Motherboard... well that's a tricky one. I don't really care about SLI, but a good set of USB 2.0/3.0 ports would be nice. There's also the problem of the cost of MBs with 1155 socket, which seem to be more expensive than 1156 MBs.

Bear in mind that my main PC use is gaming: I do not pretend jaw-dropping visuals, but still it would be nice to max out some recent games. Oh, and I can find hardware with a bit of discount, let's say around 50€ less: e.g. the i5 I mentioned earlier costs about 199€ (266$) here, and I can have it at about 150€ (200$).

If I don't ask too much, I would love to know what do you think about it and your suggestions. Thanks for reading this and for your future help.

EDIT: I forgot to ask details about the power supply: how much power do you recommend?

You should be fine with the i5.

I would avoid OCZ ram. They arent very good.

I think USB 3.0 should be the least of the concern you can buy a PCI-E X1 expension USB 3.0 card for relatively cheap

i5 can max out any game. Are you going to upgrade the 460?

Thank you StuffStuff1!

I'm not going to upgrade my GTX460, I love it.

I'm eager to know your suggestions on which motherboard and RAM I should buy, folks! Thanks in advance.

Well Im not a intel Overclocker.

So i really dont know whats good for them (Especially sandy bridge)

*Edit i can help you with your power supply

Sandy brige at full load will use ~ 115W

GTX 460 will max out at ~160W

Which means you need a power supply with more then 22.5 A on the 12v rail.

If you dont plan to SLI or do any major upgrades here are some choices

If you plan to SLI in the future and make some upgrades with out having to buy a new PSU

There you go!

make sure you get a p67 mother board and a i5 2500K if you are going to over clock.

EDIT: this may be a good build for you.

I can only find an i5 2500, without the K. I read somewhere it's overclocking locked, is it true? Any alternatives?

EDIT: I built up on your suggestion and picked some of the components with the best price (and available). What do you think about it? Is there any incompatibility between components? Thanks, once again.

Oh, by the way, I currently have a Gigabyte GZ-X2 middle tower case: am I supposed to buy another one or is it still ok?

You cannot overclock any of the sandy bridge processors unless you get a K version one with the unlocked multiplier.I f you do get a K version then make sure you get a P series chip set with it too. But if you get a P series board you must have a graphics card because you cannot use the on board video with P67.I would also avoid cooler master PSU's get a antec, corsair, seasonic or XFX
