Will Bulldozer work on current AM3 Motherboards? - If so could be a big blow to Intel

Sometimes I get confused, so many intel sockets with every cpu release! 1156, 1155, 1366, what the heck! Why why why a new socket for every release! Give consumers a break!

If Bulldozer is AM3 socket, what an advantage! Plus if it's AM3 socket, I'm pretty sure no killswitch or DRM will be implemented like it is with sandy bridge processors!

Plus none of this 8x/4x in multi-gpu mode that ruins performance on socket 1155 sandy bridge motherboards.

This is all just speculation BTW. But I have read that Bulldozer will be AM3. Question is...can we wait for bulldozer?

Hey it's that guy again..

But to answer your question before you write a book about it, no.

AM3 chips will work on AM3+ boards, however Bulldozer chips are AM3+ and will not work on current AM3 boards.

Btw my computer won't boot with my pirated copy of windows 7 and I can't download anything off any torrent sites because the kill switch in my SB chip shuts my computer down.

AMD will be using AM3+ as far as we know. it will be the same deal as AM2+ tho. the AM3+ CPUs will work on the AM3 board but the AM3 CPU wont work in an AM3+ board.

its still unknown if BD will even be ahead of 1155 or 2011. some reports say they will be close, but we wont know till AMD actually ships something.

Official for the AMD part.

Edit: Ops, didn't see the one you quoted, the first post is correct. Current AM3 in AM3+, but no AM3+ in current AM3.

Actually you have that backwards.... AM3 CPU's are supposed to work on the AM3+ boards, but AM3+ CPU's will not work on the AM3 boards....

Other way around. AM3 CPUs will work on AM3+ boards (and this was additionally confirmed by their graphic showing the 880G chipset being recycled for AM3+), but as far as it goes AM3+ CPUs should not be compatible with AM3 mainboards. Still a great upgrade path IMO.

that breaks my hearth I was hopping to skip SB and wait for Bulldozer and only buy the CPU and not mobo.

Bulldozer will have AM3+ socket and as far as I know there is no kill switch. Rumors have it that Bulldozer will be released in April 2011 if the yields are good, which they are using 32nm, and if GlobalFoundries can manufacture something on a timely basis.

I am really looking forward to the release of Bulldozer and am eager to know the performance against the Core i7 CPUs. I read on Softpedia that Bulldozer will be 50% faster than the current generation of quad-core i7's, but AMD refused to comment if this was the 4-core or 8-core Bulldozer they were comparing it to.

Sigh, the kill switch is for businesses. intel can't kill your CPU. sigh. the DRM is for businesses, and you'll still be able to play unsigned AVI or MKV files, as it's open source.

Am3+ mobos will work with Am3 CPUS (X4,x6 etc), but the current boards can't run bulldozer!
