I don't want to go Intel again. What I need is a solid AM3+ board, buy an $80 Phenom 555 and get a 4+Ghz dual / quad (if lucky) core. If AM3+ doesn't come out in a month or two, I'll be forced to go Sandy Bridge.

Any better ideas out there?
Why do you need an AM3+ board with an X2 555? There are plenty of good mobos around now that will run an X2 555 just fine. When Bulldozer comes out and the board makers get all the kinks in their BIOS's worked out you can sell your stuff and upgrade then. If you're going to jump on Sandy Bridge then just do it. No doubt it would be better for scientific software.

I gave up on this wait. I got myself an Asus Crosshair IV Formula motherboard and sorted myself out. I could sell it on, yes, but who knows, perhaps Intel's Ivy Bridge has AMD's Bulldozer for breakfast, hence my reluctance to get anything related to Socket AM3+ until I know that's what I want.

This won't happen until consoles catch up with PCs, which by definition won't happen. Today's gaming industry is console-based, unfortunately. Twitch shooters for everyone!

Personally, I hate trading, whether cars, computers, or anything else. You'll always take a loss, and the buyer gets a great deal.

If I buy a board, I want a good board. And if I buy a good board, I don't want to sell it in 6 months. You can bet when BD hits, AM3 and Deneb/Thuban prices will drop like a tank. Just ask the guy who bought a high end Netburst before Conroe launch...

I'm not trying to "jump" on anything. But when I finish building up my workstation in a month or two (for work), I'll have to make a decision.

So I guess you're sitting on a mountain of old hardware that you won't sell because you won't get the price you paid for it? Is that about right?

Hmm, looks at my sig, sounds about right. The best part is, I also get to sit on a mountain of unused cash

Nah, I won't have a mountain of parts to start with because I don't switch so often. I simply use my hardware till it's obselete, and then recycle or build a NAS / home server with it.
