Strange behavior, GTX 580 with new waterblock..?

I installed my EK-FC580 tonight and put the card in my system. Now temps are great. Idle at 25c and load at 38c. I ran Unigine Heaven with max settings for 15 minutes and everythnig was fine.

Then i powered down (moving pc back to the office) and powered it up again. After i logged into windows about 2 minutes later the screen went black and the monitor said 'No signal'.

So i powered off and on again and it was the same issue.

So i take the card out and have a look making sure that the block was sitting flush against the card, it was so i put it back. Then I booted up and i have been running Unigine Heaven ever since. It's still running while i write this post.

I thought maybe the VRM's were overheating, but if they were the PC should have crashed by now.

What do you people think?

You might have overtightened the 4 screws around the GPU, slightly damaging the DVI port.

that was the first thing that popped into my mind

It's a possibility. I didn't tighten them all that much to be honest, but it could happen of course. I've touched the back of the card and there is no spot on the card which is extremely hot to the touch.

Maybe some TIM got on the PCI-E contacts and it was removed when i took the card out and put it back again.

I don't really know, it seems to be worknig fine now.

Might have a faulty port/cable. Try with another one and see how it is.

Why would anyone assume a cable is at issue? He didn't say he tried another port the second time around, right?

Probably you just jostled the card slightly out of place during the move. I hate the PCI-E interface, really. It is very easy to install a card without having it actually "snap" in place as indicated by the retention mechanism cocking back.

Lets hope thats all it was. If so it was an easy fix

That's probably all it was. (jostled loose)

When I installed my first 580, I only nudged my case slightly and it had come loose because I made the bonehead mistake of thinking it was secure when in reality, the pcie retainer hadn't fully snapped into place.

No problems since then.

Probably just a freak accident. As long as you installed the block exactly as the instructions said, you shouldn't have any issues with vrm's burning up.

Reseat your block and don't use any more pressure than is necessary. It's a lot of trouble but worth it, unlike CPU cooling there are no significant temp gains from absurd mounting pressure with GPU blocks/coolers.
