[Tom's]Intel wants to play a game with ARM

During Intel's fourth-quarter earnings conference call Thursday, CEO Paul Otellini revealed company plans to compete with the rapidly growing ARM chip ecosystem knocking at the backdoor.

Of course, there's also rival Nvidia and its just-announced "Project Denver" consisting of a Nvidia CPU--running the ARM instruction set--that's fully integrated with a Nvidia GPU. This will bring ARM up into the PC sector, making it available for desktops, data center servers and even supercomputers.

So what's a CPU giant to do in order to show the new kid in town who's boss? Attack from three fronts, starting with the Atom processor. "In 2011, you will also see Atom in a wide array of tablets running three different operating systems: Windows, Android, and MeeGo," Otellini said during the call.

The fact that they're competing against the most power efficient architecture around with a joke of a "CPU" makes me lol hard

We will see Atom... Well why would we necessarily want to see it in all of that? lol ARM is an established architecture that performs quite well, and Intel still hasn't gotten their Atom to compete on power requirements...

"Joke of a CPU"

Even at 2.5 watts on the 45nm lithography, Atom is significantly more powerful than any derivative of ARM, especially vanilla ARM.

The trick for Intel is to get the entire Atom platform to perform at the same level at 1 watt for mobile devices.

If they can do this then they have a legitimate competitor to ARM on their hands.

you never know. it's Intel. they could come out with something amazing...

i don't think it's a wise idea to write off Intel when it comes to CPU's because when they want a market they can be pretty ruthless...

Well, I really hope ARM takes off. I'm guessing that it uses less power than x86, and if it does and has comparable performance, it would be a godsend for computing. It would help folders out with their electric bills too.

Its not an x86 processor... That's why is can afford to have such minuscule power requirements.

But I think what he was saying is that if it performs as well as x86 and Windows makes their next OS arm-compatible, then we might start seeing desktops running ARM in the future...

I have no comment on the matter, myself.

Yep, that's what I meant. And they already demoed Windows 8 running on ARM.

I've seen an arm on the desktop. It was about 8 years ago. All you gotta do is go back to the past to see everything that's ever happened.
