Just can't seem to get stable at 3.8GHz... (Phenom II X4 965BE) - Page 2

Hahaha worst case scenario put a case fan attached to your CPU. I've ghetto-rigged those in the past.

Good luck though!

I'm jealous you can hit 2800 on the nb freq though. I need 1.45 volts just to boot with it and who knows how much I'll need to stabilize.

I was going to but only high-performance fans I have are 80 and 120mm and didn't feel like attempting to duct tape one on right now. xD Right now I'm looking around newegg trying to think of what I want to buy for my computer. I really need more RAM but I'm not sure if I should save money buying 4GB DDR3 1333 sticks and not bother learning how to overclock RAM or buy one 4GB DDR3 1600 stick and learn how to tighten timings/overclock by leaving it at 1333MHz (MB max speed without overclocking).
But then I also need a better CPU cooler and am not sure if I should buy a sorta-cheap air cooler for the CPU or wait and save up to get a very long wanted water cooling system. Having a limit of ~$100 right now to spend on my computer and needing two different higher-priced things for it is not fun. Lol

I'm sure most OC'ers will shoot me but I'm starting to like the stock downward air design.

Most cheap motherboards seem to need the downward draft to cool the motherboard chips (mine included). I had better motherboard temps with the stock cooler but obviously my CPU ran hotter.

Again OC'ers might shoot me but I find just upgrading your system every few years better than buy specialized equipment to OC.

Also found tighter ram timings negligible. I'm running loose (stock) timing for my speed and like my 1T setting more. In actual performance I haven't noticed. With tight timings I couldn't get 1T so had to stick with 2T.

Also check the timing from factory, they seem to matter more on price of ram than the mhz.

Update: After running my computer around a day with 3.7GHz CPU 2.8GHz CPU-NB I decided ~50C idle just was not right, so the first thing I tried was backing the CPU-NB down from 2.8GHz to the highest speed achievable on stock voltage; 2.4GHz. It now idles around 40C again. The best testing I could find to benchmark was on AIDA64 and here they are before and after the downclock.

2.8GHz CPU-NB:

2.4GHz CPU-NB:

Obviously a performance drop, but until I get a better cooler I'm willing to drop the speed.

Please run large FTT tests.

Until 8+ hrs in prime95, it mostly stresses our CPU and not our IMC.

I've had "stable" 2600 mhz nb-freq and would only fail 11-12 hrs into the test.

I don't believe stock voltage is enough for 2600 mhz, maybe 2400 mhz (2200 was my max at stock voltage).

Congrats though! How much slower does it feel from 2800 mhz?
