X4 955 BE, what does increasing voltage on NB do?

Thread Starter
Trying to put in the final touches on my OC and have a few questions for fellow OC'ers.

What does voltage effect for the NB (not the CPU-NB)?

I hate upping voltage and I just had to up my CPU-NB since I failed the last stability test at 12 hrs in prime95.

Currently at

X4 955 BE C3 at 3.6 ghz at 1.42 voltage
NB freq 2.6 ghz at 1.35 v
Ripjaws CL9 at 9-9-9-25-34-1T at 1.52 v

And stability testing currently.

My last OC was

X4 955 BE C3 at 3.6 ghz at 1.4 voltage
NB freq 2.6 ghz at 1.325 v
Ripjaws CL9 at 9-9-9-25-34-1T at 1.52 v

Originally failed at 6 hrs and pumped the CPU voltage by 0.2 and passed twice but failed at the 14 hr mark. I know I'm being anal but I need to pass a 24 hr stress test.

About to hang my head in frustration since my instability only occurs at 8+ hrs. Hoping the up in voltage in CPU-NB will stabilize.

Also system will pass with ram at 2T at CPU-NB 2.6 ghz at 1.3 voltage but I'm finding the performance from 1T worth it in multitasking.

Also pass lower timings on 2T but again I personally found 1T better than the tighter timing but I'm guessing it stresses the IMC more.

So long story what does NB voltage does and can I pump a few more volts there to pull my voltage back on other components?

Also I have the 870 Gigabyte mobo which has no mosfet heatsinks so rather not play with the FSB. Heck I'm scared of toasting my NB with their cheap heatsink.

Thanks all.

Edit: NB voltage has been stock 1.1 the whole time.
About to just be hang the hat at this point. Stability testing at the 8+ hrs is an exercise in patience. Also I worry if my apartment burnt down while out.

It will do just that, raise Northbridge voltage. Sorry I Had to do it.

But it sometimes will help stablize a clock, but also having the NB too high will crash the computer, i keep mine as close to 2000 as possible to maximize stabability, but im not exactly sure if my NB voltage is At stock or not, i'll have to check, but still.

Hahaha its okay, its just frustrating with the lack of information on NB voltage on our chips.

I am not giving up 2600 NB freq.

It makes everything faster when multitasking. I gave up a max of 3.9 ghz and 2200 nb freq for my current aim. Lower nb freq overclocking seems easier.

I know CPU-NB voltage controls stability for the NB freq but what does the NB voltage affect?

NB voltage doesn't do too much. You can increase it a little for the hell of it if you want. The only time it would be beneficial is if you're actually stressing the NB more, which has nothing to do with NB frequency (the speed of the memory controller on the CPU). One example would be if you're running multiple GPUs since the NB controls PCI-E lanes, then in that case maybe a little bump could offer more stability. High HTT/FSB may also need a little more NB voltage as well.

Well since I have a Gigabyte motherboard that doesn't have the mosfet HS and a really cheap NB HS I'm going to pass on the NB voltage than. Wish I spent a bit more on the motherboard to get more out of my chip.

At least I get to upgrade this Christmas.

Keeping HTT stock.

Guess I'm feeling I can't get my voltages any lower.

Thanks Dopamin3 and reps!

I suggest turning up the voltage to 1.35v for your northbridge and try 2600mhz on it. Sometime you just need a little more voltage. If you see your nb getting too hot (over 55 load) then buy an Antec Spotcool fan and position it over the nb area and that should cure the thermal problem. I'm currently using 1.35v on my nb and I have mine at almost 2900mhz so you should be fine.

My NB chip is close to my video card which also gets extremely hot so rather not try upping voltage too much unless its proven to do anything significant.

From what info people have been given me (OCN rocks) NB voltage is needed with higher FSB freq's (which makes sense finally). My mobo doesn't have mosfet coolers so I rather not touch the FSB.

Also from my tests I've seen no difference in stability with lower CPU volts/CPU-NB volts aside higher ambient case temps and my 6870 running an extra 5 degrees.

FarnerBoe are you playing with your FSB?

Edit: All my efforts to not play with FSB may be in vain. I found a mosfet HS that fits in my closet. Might start playing with FSB next weekend.

Anybody with a 870a-ud3 and can give me baselines voltage/fsb or point me to it? Info on this mobo is limited on this forums (or I'm just brainfarting).
