2 Problems causing my pc to be unstable.

Hello. I have my current pc which I use daily, but not heavily. (Internet use only, transfer of music to my mp3 device, etc.) and now, I encounter 2 annoying problems. First off, is my dvd drive... It always crashes my pc each time I put a disc, be it a dvd or cd on it. When I first bought it it was good and reading discs, but after just a couple of months it started acting out like this. I'm running a core 2 duo e7500 stock,my motherboard is an asus p5kpl-am se, and my dvd drive is a Samsung SH-S223.
I have tried to switching sata slots, uninstalling the device on device manager and restarting my pc, but it doesn't help. At random times it doesn't crash and it plays/installs, but after I remove the disc and insert another/or the same disc that it previously read, it won't read it again and it will crash.

Second, is whenever I remove a hard drive, either I replace it with my working cd drive, my other hdd, or just simply remove it because I'll not use it on that pc session, when I turn my computer on again it simply won't boot again normally. To make it boot again I have to do random things: such as remove the video card, attach it again, remove the RAM, put it in another slot, remove the connected hard drives, etc. and there it'll work again. I don't know what's causing this, maybe you people could clear it up to me and give me a solution since this pc is very helpful to me when studying.. Thanks.

When you say crash, do you mean your system is locking up and wont respond at all when your using the dvd? if so it just means you need a new ROM, or to clean it..if it hangs and constantly trys to read, and fails, it will cause the system to become unresponsive. As for your HDD issue..Does the HDD your removing contain an OS? or perhaps any of the programs that are set to start up when you boot? Why exactly do you remove the drive in the first place?

+rep.
When it crashes, the system locks up but I can still scroll the mouse. But on the seldom occasions that it goes and reads the disc on the drive, it reads it perfectly.

I have my permanent hard drive (160) that I never remove. My 2 drives all contain saved data (wikipedia pages, info, music, ps1 games, etc.) I remove the drives when necessary like when I need a disc inserted.
BTW my motherboard has only 2 slots, and only 1 IDE slot.

Ohh okay so your removing the drive so you can even use the dvd...well the issue is most liekly being caused by having a game or something installed on the drive your removing, maybe not a game but some application, You could buy a Sata/IDE to USB adapter and use that with your dvd drive so you could have all of them running at once? Though it would be slower..just a suggestion of course =)

Nope.. nothings installed on the drives.. so there's no software fix for this? If not I'll just wait and buy a new drive. But I feel for my dvd drive as it is "unused"..

I dont believe so =( It's hard to pinpoint what exactly is causing it. As far as the Dvd goes, I know how you feel, I had to replace mine not even a month ago and it wasnt even a year old..it got lot's of use though =p so I guess that doesnt really count..
