I have an old 295, and from personal experience dealing with sli, you need to have both cards seated and powered to see it as an option in the nvidia configuration panel.

Also because you don't seem to have dealt with SLI before, it is important to remember that both of your cards must be the same. You cannot mix and match different cards, 460 from msi and 460 from gigabyte would work for instance, but a 460 and 465 would not work in an sli configuration.

Also depending on which cards you have and what version of drivers you are using, you will need to have the SLI bridge installed on both matching cards in order to enable SLI.

Please fill in your system information so that we can give specific guidance.

Depends on the rest of your hardware, but around 720 watts would be a good estimate for a well built, quality power supply.

750 watt Thermaltake is plenty for sli 470's.

For dual 580's I would think somewhere around 850 watts.
Again, brand and other hardware dependent.
