New HTPC Digital Tuner build - Page 3

Not to hijack your thread but Comcast came by this morning and installed the cablecard for my infinitv quad tuner!

The negatives -the Ceton FAQ and install guides do not warn about how long the install can take. Even though the tech wasn't a doof we both had a few headscratching moments until we figured out through a buried menu in WMC that the damned cable card was updating firmware (and this was literally a wait and see that took about a half hour). Before we figured this out it took us a bit to get it all working.

Also WMC refused to automagically accept the 4 tuners it would only see it as one - we had to do manual install to make it accept 4 tuners. Now my only hope is that it properly records on all 4 once we have shows come up together for recording...

Overall it wasn't too bad since the tech was laid back and willing to chat me up and actually was ok with me knocking my brain to help figure out what was going on as it was only his second time installing a cable card for a Ceton tuner and the first time he claims it was actually fixing a bad install from an OEM so most of the work was already done.

Either way sorry to hijack if you want I can make my own thread but just thought this was a more appropriate spot for now

Not at all. Since i had a single digital tuner years back, i ran through a similar head shaking procedure then. The most recent card i got, we both could not figure out why i could not tune in channels. After he made some calls and got someone to check the config of the cable card itself, we found out that it was never reconfigured to be a 1-way card (when in a cable box, they are set up as 2-way) after it was recovered. As soon as his manager came by and dropped off a new, verified 1-way card, it was up and running in minutes. (luckily i had already done the firmware updates before he arrived). It is really hit or miss and many times the tech coming to "install" the card can be clueless as to what steps to take when the outlined procedure does not work. So far every-time i have been told, " ... I've done tivo boxes before, but i have never seen a computer setup like this one!"
At this point, i almost consider myself a pro at cable card install/initiation, but not an expert, since i know next time i get one, it's almost certain some new problem will arise and i will sit back scratching my head. :-)

Any recommendations on 60MM fans for the NB? Been trying to get the system to run a tad quieter and that is one of the fans that is making the most noise. I replaced at one point the stock 780i NB fan with a higher CFA one (since then OC-ing that board was the primary concern). It is a 60x60x10 spinning around 4K (when not turned down via fan controller). My only concern is that a full width fan (25mm i think) may touch the CPU HS.
I found this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835119139
Any other fans to check out??

Are you sure it is 10mm thick? 60mm fans are usually 15mm or 25mm.

Which 780i do you have? There are mods to improve the various stock heatsinks.
Once again...

its the system i have in my signature (XFX 780i). I have done a few mods back when the board was in my gaming rig and used for dual monitor gaming. i personally removed all the HS and redid the paste. replaced the pads with copper where i could... i am not having a heating issue at all as of yet (all overclocks, etc set back to stock), just a little loud for a HTPC IMO.
As for the fan, the details say 60x60x10 , and i have to say , it is thin!
