6950 shader unlock with voltage control - Page 9

1. Having used the registry hack to unlock the higher frequencies, and added PC +20% in CCC, do I just keep upping the GPU and memory clock till it fails and then start doing manual voltage to find a stable point (but not above say 1.3v)?

2. I have a hot room, usually about 28-30c ambient. I'm guessing that even with a bunch of case fans running, getting it above say 910mhz is going to be hard with sensible temps. Would having a case fan blowing into the card fan help (probably a spare Yate Loon 120mm)?

3. As I use a LCD tv as monitor with fixed 1366x768 resolution (for now at least), how can I really test for stability when I can't stress the card on hi-resolutions as you guys do? Or does this not really matter as the card won't ever get that stressed in gaming use (only FPS I play is Arma II titles currently).
If you're on a modded stock bios, I'd just overclock till you hit the max and stay there. At a stock voltage of 1.065 or 1.1v, if yer lucky you can hit 900/1400, and you should count your blessings if you do hit that cuz that's a fantastic clock. It's not worth adding voltage in a hot environment, the added heat, instability, added noise, are a big negative imo.

I tried a few permutations over the weekend, but at stock voltage 900/1400 wasn't stable in 3dMark11, though it passed Heaven easily. Dropping the memory back to 1375 seemed to be ok in both (actually had better scores), but after 2 hours of playing a particularly busy Arma 2 scenario (e.g. 50-100 units, armoured vehicles, helicopters and pre-dawn to daylight lighting transition) it stalled dead on me. Temperatures were not too bad in game, rarely reaching above 55-60c with a slightly aggressive fan profile and side and bottom case fans (2x Yate Loon D12SL-12) ramped up a little. I'll try with RAM lowered to 1350 still at 900mhz, and see whether it is any more stable and what effect it has on frame rates and smoothness.
One thing I can't get used to is using profiles in Afterburner to limit the time spent running at higher clocks to when I'm in games and not idling surfing the web. The automatic profile allocations I set (2D = stock 6950, 3D = 900/1375) don't seem to change as they should.

Anyhow, if your games and stress benches run fine, then why care about ATI tool?

After flashing the card to 6970 bios (Asus, Sapphire, XFX, MSI, etc..) all my games run smooth. Benchmark and stress test without a problem except for ATI Tool. I keep getting artifact in ATI Tool with every 6970 bios flash. So I thought maybe that's all my VisionTek could handle... I was wrong. I've read through Guru3D forum, http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=335318, and one of the member had a solution. He created 6950 mod to unlock the shader from the original bios without the overclock and the extra voltage. I was contemplated on using it because I wanted the extra voltage to overclock higher. After several hours of reading I decided to give it a try. ATI tool no longer show artifact but I can't reach 840+ on the core due to CCC limitations I came across another thread at 4AM! and got my MSI Afterburner to voltage tweak my 6950 with a few easy adjustment. So now I have an unlock 6950 with voltage control running 6970 spec without no artifacts at lower voltage! It was a win win situation!

6950 Mod - Shader unlock http://forums.techpowerup.com/showpo...&postcount=381

MSIAfterburnervoltunlock.exe This version of AB will allow over 1.3v.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...6&d=1291470526

After unlocking the shader go to MSI Afterburner directory and look for MSIAfterburner.cfg.

UnlockVoltageControl= 1 (default 0)
UnlockVoltageMonitoring= 1 (default 0)

Then go to MSI After burner setting and check unlock voltage control and unlock voltage monitoring.

There you go... now you have a 6950 unlock shader with your original bios + voltage control and no CCC limitation on overclock.

I increase the voltage by a little bit to show yall that it work.

2) can i flash any 6970 bios on my MSI 6950 TF III? of if you have any suggestion.

3) also pls can someone post some setting that you can reach? like clock, memory and shared speed?

thank you guys for your help!

How do you use the ATI Overdrive +20% or +50% power option with afterburner? For me I have to enable it and set my clocks, but it will overwrite my AB settings. I can't have both active at the same time. Do you need the CCC power option enabled if you are upping the voltage anyway?

Also, for some reason I can't unlock the voltage in AB.

UnlockVoltageControl= 1
UnlockVoltageMonitoring= 1

That not enough?

based on my n00b understanding, if you are using after burner, you don't need the overdrive +20%. The overdrive setting only boosts the voltage on the gpu to a safe limit when you ramp up the clocks and there is a lot of demand on the card.

But after burner lets you decide the voltage, bypassing the safe limits etc..
