Well just got an update from Greg, they are sending a nickel base. Apparently he asked me to return the old block via "economy mail" which probably means I have pay the return shipping.

edit: just checked w/ the usps.com, looks like the base can fit it into their small flat rate box, its under $15. Good news though, weight is well within this rates max allowed, so I'm hoping it will ship out for this small fee.

Too bad you have to pay any shipping, but I'm glad to hear you're getting a new block.

This same thing is happening to both my GTX480 blocks from EK, and I know exactly why. The nickel plating is so thin in some areas that is losing adhesion due to the oxidation of the copper underneath. How do I know? I took the blocks apart to take a really good look at what this black stuff was. (Yes, there goes the warranty, but I knew EK wasn't going to honor the warranty anyway because of their net-wide BS warnings after they sold tons of these blocks.) I wanted to see what the black stuff was, so I took some 1000 grit sandpaper and just barely rubbed it to see if there was a color change. (This would tell what was corroding) What I found was copper. Keep in mind that an acceptable mil thickness of nickel would have taken a whole day to sand through with 1000 grit sandpaper; this took very literally less than 5 seconds. Now, I spent 7 years painting cars professionally and hold 7 certifications in paint and body repair; believe me when I say I know what I am talking about. I'm not going to bother contacting EK about this so they can deny my warranty, I am just never going to buy a thing of theirs ever again. Here's a little business tip for them: if you know something is not right with your product, warranty it. Even if you don't think it's your fault, the good will you earn with customers from it is worth tons of free word of mouth advertising (see EVGA). If you immediately start warning everyone that no additives in their cooling loop are allowed and start making up your own chemistry laws to excuse a manufacturing mistake, your days as a company are numbered. Bye EK, nice knowing you. BTW, I'm using pure distilled water.

Have you ever nickel plated your car? my 2cents is not!so you pro experience is off the way here.
too many fumes from paint??

I had a similar experience with EK and my 5870 copper block. It was only 1-2 months old and it had a black tarnish surface that would only come off with sanding. Only used distilled water and 2 small drops of PTNuke. My swifttech CPU block which was also copper did not have any of this black junk on it. I'm guessing EK quality has gone downhill and I won't be buying there products anymore. Kind of sad since they make the best looking blocks IMO.

No, I've never nickel plated a car. I've also never trolled a thread.

Just so you know, I have been through corrosion classes and have a certification in corrosion protection. You know, the type of class where they talk about minimum thickness of coatings (including plating).

Congratulations on your trolling success!

I call trolling, a flaming without backing up cases with evidence and scientific facts,

P.S: Nickel can also corrode and plating is few microns thick. I guess you need to return certificate.

Well, after submitting a ticket and 1-2 weeks correspondence I also managed to have Greg send me a replacement. Hopefully I'll receive shipping notification soon. One thing for sure, EK isn't going to give away replacements willingly. In the end, am happy that EK will stand behind their products.
