I wish i could but it will cause too much problem so ill avoid the canon printer driver support for linux... but ill build a real server when I have money...

Can I use a old g5 as a server without buying mac server software

Thanks truly

Erm, you should be able to just install OSX, it's not like you need a key or anything (at least I didn't need one when installing onto my Mac, albeit my knowledge of OSX is a bit limited). I do believe there are PowerPC distributions available, as well.

Any distro with PPC support, Debian comes to mind first since A) I love it, and B) It fully supports PPC. Though honestly any distro that supports PPC and works will be good.

http://penguinppc.org/about/distributions.php

[edit] I'd also go with 64bit distro's, since you can get more ram for server work. =) I'd probably still just go 64bit, most large distro's have decent support.

Naw, a lot of distro's support PPC but that's still different then ones that still support it (on going support). So that's not a bad question, compared to a lot of others I see. I'd rather get "can you install on a G5 (PPC)" over "how do I install linux?" The latter is as easy as insert disc, read instructions. At least PPC is open ended. =P

Haha.. your right... linux to a ppc. Actually was the conception... I wanted to hear the answer from hardware guys..cause the'd give you an answer with some feel..
Better yet than installing linux on a ppc question is which distro handles a dual processor G5 the best...

I may use a gateway pc(I can't stand pre-built comps) as my server since it runs on less watts but installing ubuntu in the mac will make it actually fun to keep in my opinion...plus its got two ethernet ports... a simple linux file sharing server setup is many times more appealing than a mac os

Thanks seems like 8.04 hardy heron distro is it for lts in ubuntu form. . will the new ubuntu server distro work with my dp G5?

I'd go with at least 9.10, possibly 10.04? If you want to try Debian Squeeze just got froze. That means if you download the Testing iso's right now you'll be getting squeeze, which will become the next "release" in stable. =)
