Rad Size - Page 2

Yeah im not doing any of that, im just playing games, and want the rig quiet. Even though I get into the 80c at 4ghz with my temps under 100% prime95 on my H70, the reality is that it sits in the 70s while gaming on max settings..

As I said, my goal for this lan box is to be silent, and run my 920 at 4ghz while keeping its temps "acceptable". The Case is lan friendly, and I need this water cooler to be case friendly..

Next home computer, thats when i can get crazy and pick up an external 4 fan rad or something and go for some temp records, because it wont be moved around, but this one tends to travel with me 2 to 3 times a month to friends houses, which is my biggest reason i am trying to fit all this in, with as bare minimal components/rads as possible.. Why im not just staying with the H70 that's working for me now.. well what fun would that be

I think from your guy's advice, what im going to do at this point, is use the Koolance Rad i have (i mean i bought it already) and throw my system together next week and see how the temps are with just the CPU and single rad and watch my MB's NB and SB temps closely and leave it at that.

If the MB starts getting out of control, im going to activate Plan B, and get creative by adding a second 120mm Rad someplace (not sure yet where) and then pick up the full MB waterblock to deal with thoes temps. From what im getting, two 120s should deal with the CPU and MB pretty easily.

My video cards change too often for me to invest the money into 2 blocks for thoes SLI'd, so ill never expand THIS box beyond the MB and CPU so i think i should be ok there.

UPS says my parts should be in on Wednesday, so ill take some before/after pics and post them when im done!

It you keep your rig in a room at 65F, great but I was folding with the rig out on the back porch(at 95F) so I would not have to listen to it. Another really big factor is how many volts it takes to run at 4GHz, Typically I go a bit high and use 1.28 with a i7-930,seems to add folding stability. You don't want to crash doing one of the -bigadv WU's.

EDIT: No way at all would a single 120 rad work in my situation, folding is an extreme application of hardware though.
A single 120 could definitely work in that situation, just slap a 4000 rpm fan on it. It will dissipate way more heat than that cpu can produce

I read a lot about using the GT fans instead as they have the best static pressure, but I came across these Apache Blacks that I liked a bit better.. i know the GT's are raved about almost everywhere, but they are pretty ugly too!

I see from this

That the static pressure of the GT at 1800rpm is aprox 0.081 inH20 which is pretty good.. I want to keep things quiet, so 1800rpm is 25db so i wouldnt run then any more then that.

Then i saw the Apache fans at 2.64 mmH2O, which converted to inH20 is 0.16.. but, is only 1300rpm and 16db making them practically silent.. so i decided to try them out.

CFM between both fans are between 55 and 60 so comparable on that front anyhow.

Well see how well they do tomorrow!

Overall Verdict:
The goal was not to break records for temps with this setup, it was timply to improve upon the H70 temps which I was reaching into the high low 80s while stress testing.. most games wouldnt be so CPU dependent and would sit around mid 70s..

Well by adding a better quality rad, better fans, supposedly a better CPU block, and a stronger pump with reservoir.. it has been actually disappointing. I wouldnt say a failure in any case, but the temps are actuay comparable to the h70 still.

Idling my ambient is actualy slightly higher then the h70, but at 100% load with Prime after 45 min im doing slightly better then i was, as it hangs around 75ish.. Thats a good 8 - 10 degree improvement.

During a 3 hour stint in Battlefield Bad company 2, i didnt actualy SEE the temp, but HWMonitor reported the "highest temp" was 78c.. Which still is better then the H70, by a handfull of degrees, BUT, not what i was hoping.

Of course, i could always throw on a second Rad, or even move to a better case setup where i could mount a 240x120 rad.. however, that wasnt my goal here either, as this is my LAN case, and 2 things i dont want are A) a bigger case, or B) an external rad to get damaged.

So.. all in all, was it worth the money? No... was it an improvement? Slightly.. Am i happy? Hell yeah! A full water cooling lop is still pretty cool, and takes me back to when i was running one on my celeron 566 clocked to JUST under 1ghz with a garden pump and a bucket of water in my condo

Watercooling has come a LONG way, and if anything, its simply been fun to play around with whats out there now.

Thanks for following, anyone who did!
that seems CRAZY i played bfbc2 today for about 2 hours or so and never broke 56c..

Overall Verdict:
The goal was not to break temp records with this setup, it was simply to improve upon the H70 temps I had when it was installed. (Low 80s @ 100% Load... Most games would sit around mid 70s.. and 35c Idle while clocked to 4ghz)

Well, by adding a better quality rad, better fans, supposedly a better CPU block, and a stronger pump with reservoir.. it has been actually disappointing. I wouldn't say a failure in any case, but the temps are still comparable to the H70.

Idling is slightly higher then the h70 (sits around 37c), but at 100% Load with Prime95 for 45 min, it's slightly better then before (Hangs around 75ish).. That's a good 8 - 10 degree improvement.

During a 3 hour stint in Battlefield Bad company 2, I didn't actually SEE the temp, but HWMonitor reported the "highest temp" was 78c.. Which still is better then the H70, by a handful of degrees, BUT, not what I was hoping.

However, I used the thermal paste to remount my h70 at one point, and on this loop i used some OZC Freeze.. i dont know which is better, id hope the OCZ stuff, but its a variable between the 2 setups either way.

Of course, i could always throw on a second Rad, or even move to a better case setup where I could mount a 240x120 rad.. however, this is my LAN case, and 2 things i don't want are A) a bigger case, or B) an external rad to get damaged. So, for now, I think this will do.

All in all, was it worth the money? No... was it an improvement? Slightly.. Am I happy? Hell yeah! A full water cooling lop is still pretty cool, even if its nothing more then bragging rights to friends.
