motherboard for I7 gaming rig??

Thread Starter
Hello folks , i need some suggetions for my new system! I am building a New system, for high end gaming and i also plan to overclock it in the near future.
My plan is a I7 950- and two gtx 580,s. I want to load it up with high end ram and video. I need some motherboard suggetions. I like the EGVA classified 3 but it only supports 1600 ram. Did i get this right??? i also like the ASUS rampage 3, I need some advice, should i buy the evga and load it up with 24 gigs of 1600, or a board that supports faster Ram, and put 12 gigs of 2000 or something! Please give me some feedback. Boards and ram suggestions! I have no brand loyalty or disloyalty yet , so i would like to hear your good/bad experiences. I have already purchased a Corsair ax1200 1200w psu, and a coolermaster HAF x rc 942 full tower case.

I am enjoying my classifieds. And it supports 1600MHz+ because it is an overclocking board. So it will adjust itself (or you can adjust it) to run whatever memory speeds your ram operates at.

In terms of amount of RAM, unless you are a video editor or something, you wont need 24GB of RAM. plus, populating all 6 dimm slots will hinder your max OC (because ram can't clock as high). But if you are a RAM nazi or whatever, start with 3 sticks of 4GB each. But you won't need it.

I gotta set something very straight, the Memory Controller is in the chip(CPU), and memory will OC the same on every board as long as its the same chip(CPU), don't buy a board b/c it says it supports this and that memory speeds, it is VERY hard on any i7 board to get 2000mhz RAM with a i7 950 you need like an i7 Xeon or special golden chip or a i7 970. If ram speed is that important to you go get an sandybridge board with SLI support, as SSandy bridge memory bandwidth makes X58 look like a joke.

Also with SLI i found my P67A-UD7 with nf200 for SB is faster than X58A-UD5. you also do not need that PSU unless you plan on going tri SLI.

Ok very cool . I suspected as much on the RAM speed. I am not a Nazi ( ) just looking to get the most out of my system. I already purchased the psu, and i think it was the right choice, i have room to grow. I just want to make sure i have the right Ram and Mobo to pair up with a i7 950, running two 580,s who knows mabey 3 I thought about A 980, 0R 970, 960, but for the money , i dont know if i need it ???? I do like the sandy bridge ( speed and improved onboard graphics) but am led to believe x58 is still the high end gaming platform of choice. So would i be getting full performance from 8 or 12 gigs of 1600? I am a firm believer in the bigger the faster the better! I am new to building my own system from ground up, and just hoping to cap on some experience from the VETERANS.

I think you would get more performance from more RAM, than its speed. Besides its very hard to OC RAM as the amount increases.

Did you say that backwards???

You will get more performance from speed (provided you aren't peaking ram). Your best bet is to estimate how much ram you even use. 12GB should be fine. But make sure you do it in triple channel mode. Don't do 12GB in 6 2GB sticks. RAM is just as easy to OC no matter the size of it. OCing ram only becomes difficult if you populate all 6 slots. Besides, you will need high RAM speeds to accomplish high OCing speeds.

24GB of RAM at 1066 is most certainly going to suck versus 6GB at 2000MHz lol. Cuz you will probably only be using 5GB peak anyways.

*edit*
Just to add to this conversation, i have a similar system you will be building with three GTX470s and I never go over 5GB. I may drop in 6 more gigs once I start editting Video, but I know individual RAM speed will drop. Probably down to 1400MHz ish.

maybe i did, more like i didn't think it through. yes RAM speed means something but RAM speed never makes a difference other than in benchmarks. I would think more RAm would help you out system performance wise. I only use 4gb of RAM, and well if i had these 4gb at 2000mhz The system would be slower than if I have 8gb.
