[MacRumors] Bundled iPad 2 info (some rumours)

It seems like we may get an "A5" CPU which would be based off the ARM9 Cortex, unlike Apple's current "A4", and definitely an SGX543 GPU, a retina display, front & rear camera's (FaceTime), and possibly an SD card slot.
Quote:
Version 1.1 of Apple's iBooks application seems to have accidentally included some artwork for this hypothetical pixel-doubled iPad. As shown above, the App's bookmark icon included versions for the iPad, the iPhone and the iPhone Retina Display (iPhonex2). It, however, also included one additional version labeled "iPadx2". Sure enough, this is exactly double the resolution version of the iPad icon and is distinct from the other versions. The most likely explanation for this added graphic is plans for a double-resolution iPad. Apple has since removed this extra artwork in subsequent versions of iBooks.
Source

Quote:
Introduced for licensing in January 2009, the SGX543 appears to only just now be coming ready for inclusion in mobile devices, and the new iOS 4.3 beta SDK includes references to a driver bundle supporting the graphics processor core.
Source

Quote:
The iPad 2 details are close to what has been reported. This includes a "super high resolution" screen that is akin to the iPhone 4's Retina Display. The physical screen size is said to remain the same but will feature both front and rear cameras. One somewhat new piece of information they do provide is that they claim that the new iPad will carry an SD card slot.
Source

Quote:
With Apple using the new developer build of iOS 4.3 to test new multi-touch gestures for accessing the home screen and switching between applications, speculation immediately arose that Apple might be considering doing away with the home button on the iPad as a means for shrinking the device.
Source

Its pretty solid that the iPad 2 is getting a retina display, which would confirm the GPU (or something of that performance) as the current GPU wouldn't be able to handle the display; I also think the same is likely of the CPU.

(and yes, having that info found in the first two articles is pretty much a guarantee, excluding any problems they may encounter)

It won't be a retina display. It would put the resolution at over 2500 by like 1600.

So in other words it's still going to be the best tablet in 2011.

I would hate losing a home button and relying on gestures to exit a program. Having a hard wired switch to kill an app is much better. Also, gestures can be silly like if you are swiping down but accidentally swipe up just slightly before you begin going down, it can throw off the entire thing. I'm afraid accidental exiting would be too easy.

That said, if they can offer all of this in the new iPad while keeping the price reasonable ($450 for the base version) the iPad would be much more appealing.

Yea... I can't see the iPad having a larger resolution than the 17" Macbook pro. The icons on the iPad are really small, so chances are they are just boosting them.

A 2048x1536 IPS display, at 9.7" would probably cost more than the current iPad.

Not to mention the effect that lighting all of those pixels would have on the battery, and the power requirements of displaying such a large resolution.

To make matters worse, you have to more than double the resolution of the iPad to get it to "retina" status. A retina iPad would have to have a resolution of at least 2560x1600.

TL;DR: A 'retina' display iPad would cost more than a Macbook Pro, do less, and without the 'retina' factor doubling the resolution wouldn't serve any purpose.

Chances are we'll see a slight resolution bump, maybe 1280x960 and larger icons on the homescreen.

I sure hope they bump up those icons. They look so silly on the home screen with so much wasted space. At least add a weather/RSS bar on the top, bottom or side to use the space better...

Not quite, retina doesn't mean 300+ DPI, in fact Apple never specified what it means exactly. It's just a marketing term for a high resolution display.

I've been testing these gestures and I can say from my own experience, they are quite good. I find myself not wanting to use the home button anymore, it's easier to pinch and it feels better.

In terms of accidental gestures, I've had few, if any. It seems pretty accurate so far.

It's either retina or nothing I'm afraid. Any increase that isn't an integer (2x, 3x, 4x) would cause fragmentation as developers would have to support two display sizes.

And, as I said above: retina display doesn't mean 300+ DPI, it's just a marketing term for a high PPI.

I'd like to see the gpu that can power a 2048x1536 display in a tablet, especially for gaming.

this confirms that Apple won't get anything that's better than the minimum requirements for the software the iPad is going to run
