[MacRumors] Bundled iPad 2 info (some rumours) - Page 3

I'm strongly considering an iPad 2 depending on what it has. I need to read the paper and news on the train in the morning and sometimes, my phone is just painful for that. Not to mention, the iPhone's reception is horrible.

I'll move to the following: iPad, iPod Touch, Nokia/BlackBerry

man, it seems like yesterday when the first ipad was released

Who said they actually have to do any work? Android does everything for them. The only thing that really needs any changing is images, and switching between them is as easy as tagging the images as H(igh)DPI, M(edium)DPI, or L(ow)DPI.

Android doesn't even look at the resolution. It looks at the DPI, the aspect ratio and does all of the work for you. I can actually change the DPI on my Desire and my apps will autoscale, giving me more room.

Like I said, better platform. Apple could do it this way, but they are too lazy/incompetent.

So the new iPhone will just be a 4S with A5 and iOS5?

Indeed it is, but the further away the device is, the harder to see the pixels. You're less likely to hold an iPad as close as you would a phone, imo anyway.

It's not about "working fine" but rather how much work a developer has to do to offer his app for all devices for that OS.

Are you really telling me you think it's as easy, or easier, for an Android dev to develop an app for all those screen sizes, as it is for an iOS dev to develop an app for the iPhone and supply HD images and have the OS automatically do the rest?

The last thing Apple is about to do is fragment their iPad market; they'll do exactly what they did with the iPhone 4, or nothing.
The difference is so little though, maybe a few inches.. depending on the user.

If apple releases a tablet with a resolution that high the competition might as well call it a year because nothing will come close to it in 2011. This many rumors at this point can't really be too far from the truth.
No. Not everyone has screen pixel density as the number one priority in a tablet (or even in the top 10). I for one couldn't care less about the screen resolution. For me (note, I say for me, others have other priorities) if it has
  • Dual Core
  • Button(s), be they hardware or onscreen (if iPad 2 is gesture only, it's dead to me)
  • IPS panel
  • Good touch OS
  • ~10" screen
  • Decent Battery

everything else is gravy. Right now, that pretty much leaves the XOOM, the iPad 2, and the Asus tablets, and anything else that comes out between now and whenever I buy. The iPad 2 is not likely to be my number one pick, have to wait and see what iOS 5 brings. That's leaps and bounds more important than screen resolution imho. For me, and I think most people, the software is most likely to decide it rather than the hardware, and saying which software is better is like saying which color is better while blindfolded. They are both going to be based in preference, and we have not seen anything about iOS 5 and barely anything on honeycomb.

Sidenote, anyone know how the 543 compares to what's in the Tegra 2? I thought I saw that the T2 graphics chip wasn't much more powerful than the 540, so maybe they are comparable? More on topic, I hope this is all true. Apple at worst needs to be comparable to things like the XOOM at launch, if not somewhat better hardware wise. If not, it will very quickly be outclassed in that area as more tablet makers release upgraded tablets.

Also, do you guys thing it will have 1Gb of ram? I mean, loading those graphics into memory, not to mention multitasking, even 512mb might be somewhat strained. My friend with an iPad 1 says multitasking works better on his iPhone with the extra ram in it.

Cameras, 1Gb ram, Dual Core, beefed up gpu, Great display, it would definitely be a great tablet choice.

And for all the people down rating this thread, I assume your android fans, or some other OS. Guess what, the better the iPad 2 is, the better future tablets running other OS's will be as well. Even if you despise the iPad, you want it to be as good as it can be to push your OS further.

How? Outside of Retina it wouldn't really have anything else going for it. And TBH Retina really seems to be nothing more than a gimmick. "Oh yea, it just has 2500x1600 resolution". I'm fine with 1920x1080p, do I really want that on a 10-11" screen?

Otherwise, front-back cameras seem to be getting much more mainstream with mobile devices; Cortex A9 CPU and a GPU That is seemingly only going to be a mild step up from SGX540, a GPU in a smartphone (speculation based on naming)

So Apple is adding features that should have been there in the first place (SD card, camera, etc.)

After iPad 3 or 4 it might actually be useful for more than consuming entertainment and remotely accessing other systems.

I don't want an application that isn't specifically designed for my device. How does it work on Android? When you write the app does it automatically fit the screen and rearrange the controls on any device so its as if it was designed for it? Or does it run with black bars or stretch it, etc.?

Apple is hardly lazy or incompetent, and I'd argue that iOS is the better platform, it's all opinion. Apple is doing things very well, a developer can make one app for iPhone and iOS automatically scales it on a higher resolution screen (like Android, so you say), if they were lazy they would've simply let it stretch it.

Well, yes it would actually. Having a fast dual-core energy efficient CPU, a powerful GPU, a really high DPI screen, a front/rear camera, plenty of RAM, plenty of storage, be lighter, and still have good battery life -- I'd say it'd be a good contender.

I for one, would like to watch a 1080p video on a 10" screen!

I'm thinking 1GB, if the iPhone 4 needs 512MB for it's apps (+ resources like HD images, etc.), then the iPad will need 1GB.
I'm also hoping Apple uses Super IPS, which I believe is even more power efficient and has better viewing angles.
