Fish Tank Computer

Thread Starter
For all those about to read this thread, no joke, my experiment was my Fish Tank computer filled with Crystal 70t Oil.

Images and other useful information soon to be added.

Things you will need.
  1. Fish Tank big enough for computer and coponets.
  2. Mineral Oil (specific possibly, i am unsure if you can use other types, ie motor oil)
Optional things you will need
  1. Plexiglass
  2. External bays
  3. Transmission Oil Cooler
  4. Pump
  5. Small Bolt and nuts with washers and spacers (to mount MoBo to Plexiglass with some room in between them)

Okay so now that you know what you will need ill go along in explain the dos and donts of this one of a kind type of computer (atleast in 100km radius cool.gif)

First of all you need to verify that the oil dose not conduct electricity. To my knowledge there is no safe way to do so besides looking on the internet at what other people have done. Possible oils; Crystal 70t, Baby Oil, Vegetable oil (not recommended for the fact that Vegy oil tends to get hard when very hot)

Second you need to arrange all your components, EXCEPT for your Disk Hard Drives and Optical drives, in the fashion that you like on what ever you like to be put into the tank. Reason as to witch why you can not put the hard drives or optical drives in the oil is for the fact that they need to turn at specified speeds, where the oil is thicker than air and therefor making a moving component move slow.
-Added Tip
--Even though Fans are running much slower in oil and would gennerally build heat resulting to a burnt fan, with the oil in the fans they cant heat up nor burn out. (i personally have not had a problem)
--Take Covers off of Solid State hard drives to allow the oil to flow around the chip and not the case. (burnt one SSD with case on, seems the oil gets into it but with no flow it heats up inside case)

Moving along, after you decide how you want your computer set up in the fish tank, start assembling. Putting Hard Drives and or Optical Drives in External bays, or run longer cables to the top side or any storage are you feel you want them to be placed, oil free.
-Added Tip
--Keep top of mother board out of oil to easily add and remove USB or other devices to your computer.

Lastly add the oil and watch your temperatures drop.
-Added Tip
--Having a Transmission Oil Cooler is a cheap way to keep that oil cold during long ON time. It is oil it will heat up, but will keep your computer colder longer.

For other ideas to add to your system Taking off covers to anything in the oil helps for space and oil flow. Plexiglass helps to mount the mother board and other components onto one unit. Less nag of unplugging wires and other misc problems if you feel the need to change things on the computer.

Putting Fish stones and other cool things in the tank may add style.

As for now I have run out of time, i will be adding more as time goes on. Feel free to ask any question i may just be able to answer it.

More times than I can count on all my fingers and toes. Really not something I would do. Seems a waste of components unless you are doing it possibly for a school project. and then dont use high end components.

from what i gathered, the op is going to be submerging a computer in oil. a future project perhaps. it says up at the top future pictures and information to come. the video is just to show people that it is possible and how it is done, for anyone whos is curious about the idea of submerging a computer in oil.
