GTX 460 GPU Buzzing Sound under Load - Page 2

Found a video that kind of demonstrates what I'm talking about. Though it's a bit louder in my case:

Yeah, that's definitely not cap whine. Sounds like your fan is mangled.

Pull your card out and spin the fan with your finger. Does it move freely?

Checked both fans and both move freely. Using canned air to spin them they stay silent as well more or less.

The card's temperatures are well within normal ranges (55c at highest load) and like I said there hasn't been any performance or stability issues yet. I'm pretty confused confused.gif

Hmm, I seem to be having a similar issue with one of my Hawks.

I've had them for less than a month, but just yesterday one started making this moderately loud grinding/electrical buzzing sound. At first I thought it was coming from my PSU but after opening the case it seems to be coming from the front of my card. It's not the fans, which were the first things I tested. Cranking them up to max doesn't have any effect on the noise.

The weird thing is it's not particularly consistent. Sometimes it does it while the system is sitting idle. Sometimes while under load. I do notice once the card "warms up" using Furmark (~55c) the noise stops.

There hasn't been any system instability or performance drops however. The card still works perfectly fine.

Is this really "coil/cap whine?"

I'm debating RMAing it, because it was tied to a mail in rebate which means I have to go through MSI instead of newegg where I bought it. Thoughts?

MSI RMA department SUCKS, it took them 3 weeks to give me a new gtx 460. If you can handle having your computer out of service for that long than go for it. Otherwise, suck it up.

I actually applied for an rma through antec (still waiting to hear back) and ordered a backup psu that as on sale in the mean time. Hopefully I can get this rma'd and an even better psu since this one is discontinued.

Edit: Mine sounds similar to that in sound but more high pitched; I don't think it's the fan because when I stop it from spinning the noise persists.

Yeah I've heard some not so great things about MSI's RMA dept.

ATM I have my 460 hooked up to a crappy oem 750 watt psu (came with a Dell ~3yrs ago) and I'm starting to wonder if that might be the issue. Once I get my corsair for my new build I'll try that and see if the buzzing persists.

The noise isn't noticable when I'm actually gaming as I use headphones, and she still runs like a champ, so I guess as long as there are no other probs I'll just hold off on RMA-ing.

mine whines like a mofo, has since I got it, basically I can tell exactly how much gpu load i have because of the variances in the frequency/pitch of the whine

i deal with it by not folding if i'm trying to sleep and have a headache already, if i don't have a headache then I just let it fold- also I'm not using a case atm lol sitting on the UD3R's box

nothing to do with the PSU in 90%+ of instances because when i add CPU load and double the wattage the PSU is pulling there is no change, aside from the caps on my board whining lol but since its on its box i can stick my head right in and tell where its coming from

edit: also a fun thing to do in FPS's or games like Reppelz is to spin the camera around and hear the whine change pitch by the difference in FPS, higher FPS has resulted in higher pitch whine in most games lol

Coil whine as stated... My 8800GTS 512 whines like a dying animal at folding load, sadly my brand new 570 does too. Easy way to test whether it's the coils is to change the core speed and see if the pitch changes. At least that does it for me- I can instantly tell when my WUs switch. It's the loudest thing in my comp atm and it's really obnoxious, I've debated the nail polish fix but I don't want to brick anything...

My 5870 does it under load and something else also does which is actually more annoying. The 5870's is sort of lower pitched/slower resonance and only when under load... The other one is super high pitched and constant; and well its always beaming into my left ear.

otherwise when i'm not folding everything is quiet smile.gif
