GTX260-To bake or not to bake

Hey guys, so here's the deal. I sold my old BFG GTX260's to a buddy of mine quite some time ago and they were running trouble free for him for over a year. Recently I was troubleshooting some issues with his system and found that one of the cards is toast. I cleaned and re-pasted twice and still had the same problems. The symptoms are: With the bad card, the temperature (Monitoring in afterburner) will be around 50ish at boot and then continue to climb until the screen goes black. The fan is set to 85% and it is spinning so I know that it is not a fan issue, as well the other card is just fine in the same slot so definitely a bad card. From what I have read baking is usually done for cards that have artifacts and such so my question is: Does this sound like something that a good wake and bake would fix? Honestly since BFG has screwed all of their customers with a lifetime warranty I have no other option but just curious, I'll probably just bake the bas*%#d anyways since there's nothing to lose.....

As you say, nothing to lose. Go for it.

No i think the problem is the cooler. I had the SAME exact issue. SLI GTX 260..

One will always be hotter and over heat. I swapped the heat sink and thats when i realized.

Also.. Dont ever bake a card. Your only making it a time bomb. The best you can do is get a heat gun and reflow it like that.

Thanks guys, yeah I guess I could yank the other cooler off the second card and install it on the bad one to test that theory of the bad cooler before I resort to the baking idea.

Well thanks dude, I really should have thought of that before. All is well after swapping to the other cooler, a steady 42 degrees now so I guess it's off to find a stock or aftermarket cooler for this thing. +1 for you

I been down this road you arent going to find a stock cooler :|

Or at least not at a good price..

Go to the wanted section of the forum and ask if any one has any laying around. Usually when people water cool there video cards they have extra heat sinks if you really want it.

Im not to sure what to say about the 3rd party ones tho..

Yeah thanks for stating the obvious but luckily for me it's all good, I used some contact cleaner on the fan connector and made sure the fan and HS were nice and clean. Stuck the supposed bad cooler back on the other card and it seems to be fine now back in SLI. Thanks again for your input.....
