Patriot RMA Results

EDIT: Go to post 12 for the update

Alright so 9-15-09 i purchased my current pc setup. The processor was a used OEM i got here but everything else was bought new off the egg. Since i had used exclusively DFI mobos in the past i had discovered DFI motherboards are notoriously picky with what memory they like, so i went with a set off the compatible list a Patriot DDR2 1000 kit 2x2gb model PVS24G8000ELK (click for newegg link) and i ran them stock at the recommended 2.3v for quite a while. about january 2010 i overclocked them to ddr2 1060 5-5-5-12 @ 2.36v and i ran it there till about 2 weeks ago.

The ram died when i let my good friend and fellow ocn member madcatzfight use them in his asus 780i board in exchange for him letting me use his gskill because my xigmatek dark knight was interfering with my patriots and was bending both so we were going to see if we liked each others memory since his had low profile heatspreaders.

well the second he powered his board the smell of burning silicon filled the air and he shut it off fast but it was to late.

not only was my ram dead but his motherboard and processor as well. to this day we have no clue what caused the malfunction of the setup.

luckily patriot has a lifetime warranty and my friend offered to pay shipping for the RMA since his board killed the ram.

the problem arose when patriot informed me that they are focusing on ddr3 now and no longer make any ddr2 faster than 800mhz. so they said all they could give me was the low latency kit PV224G6400LLKB which is 2.1v ddr2 800 that runs 4-4-4-12. they stated that since the memory is lower speed but also lower latency that the overall bandwidth and latency would be comparable to my ddr2 1000.

The problem im having is that bandwidth is not the issue.... i spent almost a month solid finding the sweet spot of my system as far as overclocks go and even though my processor is a BE it just doesnt respond as well to a change in multiplier VS raising the ht bus so my overall OC may be lower than multiplier adjustments but in 99% of the tests i ran it was considerably faster than OCing with the multiplier alone

My processor also HATES any memory divider but auto which is ddr2 800 at 200 ht bus...

>SO the point of all this is that running ddr2 800 is going to considerably hamper my OC and i cant find any info on how well this new patriot kit im getting overclocks or what memory modules it uses. and since DFI's LANParty boards are now gone they havent updated the supported memory list in a while and i dont know if this stuff will even work..... im having a hell of a time getting the loaner gskill memory my friend is letting me use until mine comes back from RMA (F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ) to run its default ddr2 1000 as it is

SO i really need some help finding info on this memory because i need to let patriot know asap if its going to be an acceptable exchange or if i should just ask for a refund

ALL HELP APPRECIATED AND REWARDED ;D

Memory doesn't have to be on the QVL to work. 99% of the time if it fits in the slot it's going to work, and in your case this will hold true.

Also, 800mhz CAS 4 is basically equal to 1066mhz CAS 5. They are so similar in performance. This is a very fair trade. Also from my experience if a kit does 800mhz CAS 4 at 2.1v it's going to do 1066mhz at CAS 5 at the same 2.1v. So nothing to worry about in either situation. cheers.gif

1. Performance is equal
2. Could probably run at the same settings if you wanted it to
3. Might even use better ICs, a lot of 800 4-4-4 kits use Micron D9s
post #4 of 13
I could pull out better time with prime 1m using lower latency and timings. Couldn't notice anything different when used 1066 compared to 800
It's widely accepted that lower timing with AMD work better than higher latency. QVL is bs, don't look into it.
What you can do is demand payment for shipping if there's price difference on those kits. Or something to compensate that.

the reason im so worried is that this board in particular whether its the bios version or just because it has that DFI charm doesnt like alot of memory

it has been unstable with 2 sets of ballistix tracers both 4x1gb single siders and 2x2gb dual siders that worked fine with the same proc im my old asus board and this set of gskill.... it also wouldnt even boot with a set of mushkin that works great in my sisters pc

thats why im trying to find someone who has used this memory in this particular board or find the ic's to see if other mem wit the same is on the supported list

yes but my processor will run slower thus limiting system performance

well thats atleast a bit of good news.... i kinda figured it would since my old set of ddr2 800 tracers ran 1150mhz running cas 5 vs the stock cas 4 but that was a golden set of single sided tracers that i have never been able to match

REP+ for help

the kit that they are sending me supposedly retails for more than the ram i had so they say that im not entitled to compensation frown.gif

Wait what? I was stating that AMD c2 memory controller cannot hold down high memory speeds.

My 550BE could not do 1066 5-5-5-15.

If you really feel that your IMC is not at fault, then just RMA again, and ask them to pay shipping.

and FYI, i also have 2 i7's. thumb.gif

sorry i jumped on you im just super frustrated with this whole situation and i misinterpreted your comment as a jab at my system

but i have had 4x1gb of ballistix tracers at 1152mhz 5-6-6-15 @ 2.4v memtest86 12+hr stable with this processor on my old asus board but maybe the time with high voltages is getting to it..... ill try the processor and memory in another board if i get the chance

srry again and rep+

np, I am no DDR2 expert, DDR3 is more my thing, but 2.3/2.4v seems kinda high.

yea its very high considering the standard ddr2 voltage is 1.8-1.9 but the ballistix i had loved voltage as long as you kept a ram cooler on em they were 2.0v stock i believe but in 3 different pcs over a period of 3 yrs they ran at no less than 2.35v ddr2 1100 5-6-6-15 and never had a single error....... man i miss that ram and they were the supposedly junk single sided tracers too

and the ddr2 1000 patriots i had actually defaulted at 2.3v which is the highest i have ever seen a set of ddr2 run at recommended settings and it needed it too.... it wouldnt even post with less than 2.1v even at ddr2 800 in any system so i think patriot just slapped some big heatspreaders on crappy ram and pumped a ton of voltage thru them to get em fast..... patriot is officially on my do not buy list
