OS only on a SSD?

Thread Starter
Hey Guys,

I am interested in adding a SSD to my PC but i cant afford a lot. So I was looking at a 64gb drive to put my OS on.

My question is that I will also be installing a lot of other programs as well (including Steam with which I have over 100 games). Will a SSD drive help my performance if I only have Windows on it and install everything else to a regular drive? Or will the regular drive create a bottle neck and negate any performance boost that I would have gotten with the SSD?

Thanks!

Your computer will boot/shut off faster. Rest will stay the same I imagine

Your boot times would decrease, not only that though, Windows will feel much faster and respond to everything you do more rapidly. You want to install most of your regular programs to the SSD since they will then feel snappier and open faster. Firefox, Open Office, Photoshop, all that sort of thing will feel better on the SSD.

Regarding Steam it does benefit a little from being on an SSD but much of the pauses in the interface are network waits so you don't gain the same benefits. If you have 1000 games you're never going to get it to fit on the SSD anyway without only having a handful of games installed at any one time. I recommend installing Steam itself to a larger mechanical drive and then using Steam Mover to install often played Steam games onto the SSD. That excellent thread explains how to do it in detail.
