Protip: sound cards aren't worth the money 80% of the time.

Logitech G35 headset is 7.1 surround with a built-in soundcard, the ultimate headset imo.

There are lots of benifits a sound card offers. A SC and decent headphones are a good combination. For budget, I would recomend the ASUS DG and ATH AD700. A step up would be the DX or DS and Senn 558s or AD900s. If he would prefer closed cans, the DT770 Pro80s would be my first choice, or the A700/A900s. Closed headsets will not be as comfortable for extended usage while gaming, but have more low end response.

Hey there.
The most popular gaming cans seem to be the Audio Technica AD700s. The one thing this pair has over other cans is the great soundstage, which is crucial when gaming. Beyerdynamic DT770/880/990s are also a great choice (I use 770s myself). The sound card is not as important, but if you do get one, try to get one that supports either Dolby Headphones or CMSS-3D technology, which will make your surround gaming experience much better

Hope this helps!

i have been eying the auzen bravura and you can use any of the headphones ericld mentioned as long as the ath a700. they are the closed back version of the ad700. they have close to the same sound stage as the ad700 but have more lower end for the explosions.they also isolate more then the open back so if he is in a loud environment or don't wanna disturb other people they would be good for that.

that may be your opinion but that may be all you have heard. having a good sound card or dac is so much better then on board and a usb headsets. it also helps taking some load off the processor to help you get better fps.

Idiot in so many ways. It's far from the ultimate headset and soundcard have a great improvement over onboard. What experience do you have with sound to backup your statement?

There's so many things wrong with this post. Too many to go over.

QFT.

@OP - Here's a good setup for about 100$ or just a bit over:

ASUS Xonar DG - Excellent gaming soundcard, great for headphones, built in amp for headphones, has Dolby Headphone, and really can't be beat for it's price - around $30 or less.

JVC HA-RX700 / HA-RX900 - Both are excellent, fantastic cans for under 100$ hard to beat sound wise by other similarly prices cans, and can also be modded (very, very, very easily) to improve sound even more. 700's for around $40 and the 900's for around $60.
