Thinking of getting DT770's

I'm thinking of getting Beyerdynamic DT770. I will be using them for portable use and I will be needing an amp to use them with my iPod. I have about $100-$250 for an amp. I am new to the headphone world, so I will be needing guidance on what amp will go nice with the DT770. Oh I will probably be getting the 250 ohm version.

Eh, not the best of ideas to get a full-sized headphone for portable use. Now, you might think I'm talking out of my butt when I say this, but wearing giant headphones while everyone else wears in-ears, earbuds or small, actually portable headphones gets you a lot of weird looks.

For portability purposes, you ought to get in-ears, supra-aural headphones or at least something that folds. AFAIK, the DT770 doesn't fold. Also, 250 ohms seems to be a lot for even a decent portable amplifier to be pushing.

I don't care about weird looks, I care about the sound quality more. Also I've heard that 250 ohms isn't all that hard to push.

Edit: Would the 80ohm version be much easier to push? I want to have good bass.

The DT770 Pro80 might do you better. I couldnt tell the difference between the two. Just got them couple weeks ago after spending half a day at Guitar Center testing everything they had.

There is a noticeable difference with the 600ohm on a DAC and amp.

Okay, So I'm going to get the dt770 pro 80 ohm version. I've heard that its best to have an amp with strong mids, what would you recommend? I was told the iBasso D4, is that a good one?

I'm not up on DACs and amps, and I guess it depends if you want something portable or not. The DT770 pro80 did fine right off an iPod and a PC when I tested it. An amp only gave it more volume. You might want to start another thread on that one.

On below. I agree, if you must get an amp, might as well go with the higher ohm model. I only plug my Pro80s into a receiver or lappy and they do fine.

The iBasso D4 is a fine amp, even for the dt770 pro 80. The only thing is that if you're going to spend so much money on a set of cans, you should consider getting the premiums. the 250 or 600 ohm versions don't cost too much more, but provide exquisite sound when amped properly. It all depends on how much bang-for-your-buck you want.

Hmm, It seems that I'm stuck between the 80 ohm and the 250 ohm? I know I'm definitely going to be using an amp no matter what. So I should just go for the 250 ohm version right?

It depends on how portable your amp is. I know my Pro80s work with my Droid. I havent done an extended test to see how bad they drain the batteries, but they sound good. I get a little more out of them on my receiver, so who knows, I might go for a "pocket" amp in the future. The 250ohm will definitely need an amp, so just decide how portable you want the amp. The guy at Guitar Center had an MP3 that had a built in AMP/DAC. I forget the name of it, but it was awesome.

The difference between the 80 ohm version and the 250 ohm is mostly impedance. The 80 ohm version will be loader than the 250 ohm version when played at the same settings. Beyerdynamic says that the 250 ohm version is more for high frequencies and the 80 is more for low frequencies but you really aren't going to here to much of a difference. For mobile use an amp isn't practical. The 80 ohm version will play without an amp but it won't be very loud.
