New Budget Home Server Questions

Thread Starter
So I decided I want to build a server to centralize my movie, picture, and music collection between two desktops and a laptop. I want something quiet, small, reliable and with low power consumption. I have a few things laying around an AMD Athlon 64 x2 processor and 2gb of ddr2 ram and could possibly take my 2tb WD green drive from my sig rig and put it in there. So i need a MB, something that will support Raid 1 for data safety, case and PSU. I was looking at cases with included PSUs but not sure how good they are. Also I was thinking about it being a Linux server since I don't have the money to buy WHS so would I run into problems with it being compatible with my 2 windows PCs and my Macbook? My budget is about 250-300 and can always try to find things used. Oh I also have the stock cpu cooler. Thanks for the help in advance guys Oh I'm also looking into buying a 30gb ssd from someone here just for the OS, would that be a good Idea or not necessary?

I don't think the SSD would be necessary for your server,a 40GB to 80GB sata hdd would do.As for mobo & psu you don't need something all that fancy just look for a board that would supports your cpu plus raid 1 config with on-board graphics and your set.Seeing how you already have the cpu,ram and hdd.As for an OS Amahi Home Server or any other linux distro will do what you need(free).

if you intend to run something Linux based then I wouldn't bother with RAID support from your motherboard. The software RAID option would be a much better bet.

If you run WHS, then RAID1 for the OS drives is a good idea, but I would again go for the duplication features (DE) provided by WHS v1

I've been looking into building one myself as well. I'd toss in a 2.5" laptop HDD. It will be a lot cheaper than an SSD, and it will draw less power than a normal HDD. You can get an 80gig for $25-$30 or so which will be more than enough room.

Thanks guys. The 2.5 hhd idea is actually kinda good I think I have an 80 gb laying around somewhere. Also do all PSUs draw the same amount of current at certain wattage or how do I figure out which is more efficient and will draw less current. Also will definitely look into software raid in Linux

No they do not. What you want to look for is an 80-Plus certified PSU. They come in several levels of certification. 80 Plus, 80 Plus Bronze, 80 Plus Silver, 80 Plus Gold, and 80 Plus Platinum. 80 plus explained The higher the certification the more energy effecient they are. Please note, that this certification doesn't mean the PSU is reliable, it only measures effeciency. So stick with the brands you trust and you'll be fine.

also with the PSU, you do not need a high power unit, you will be using 200w max (probably closer to 150w), and PSU's are less efficient at 20% and lower (even 80+ units) so a 300-400w PSU is what you want.

SSD is not needed, biggest gain with a SSD is boot times, and this will be on all the time, so not gain, just extra cost.
