Ya sorry about that. Media portal is great IF you don't mind spending a little time tinkering. The great thing about it is you can install your tuner on pc A and have access to that tuner on pc B,C,D...
I am not going to lie I have never set up a NTSC (cable) tuner in it but I imagine it is not that hard. The hardest part of Media Portal is setting up the EPG.

Well I tried out the Media Portal but I got frustrated with it and gave up. I'll deal with it later. I can't figure out how to see cable through it. I though it had something to do with going to the "TV Server" configuration and I added one channel but it didn't do any good.

And I'm frustrated with something else. Maybe it's the video card but the image quality is just horrible. I feel like I'm blind and need glasses. I thought it was the resolution but it's set at its highest setting it would allow me: 768p. Hook up my laptop to it and it's beautiful, look looking at a giant monitor. But with rig... ugh.

Is it the video card? Is it a different setting? Could it be that I used S-Video?

Here's spec of tv:

# Akai LCT42Z6TM 42-inch 1080p Widescreen HD-Ready LCD TV

# 42-inch Widescreen LCD
# 16:9 aspect ratio
# 1920 x 1080 resolution for Full HD 1080P performance
# Supports 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p resolutions
# HDTV compatible through HDMI and Component inputs
# Acoustic Cinema Enhancement (ACE) audio circuitry
# 8 ms response time
# 800:1 contrast ratio
# 500 cd/m2 brightness

By the way, I got the tv for free. It broke down on my parents, I replaced 6 capacitors and it now works pretty darn good.

S-video is the issue with pic quality more than likely. Use VGA at a minimum, DVI/HDMI is a much better option. I think s-video is locked to a max resolution of 720x480, and anything larger is just a stretched image of that (or something like that). S-video really is made for SD signal, not HD signal.

Just curious, your not using the 5450 yet, are you? I did not think any 5450 (or any current ATI cards) had S-video output.

Ok thanks guys. I was trying the cable on the media portal out using the 7800GT. DVI is other option on card, tv has no DVI connection, just VGA or HDMI. I have adapters for DVI - VGA but it's buried somewhere.

Edit: And of course I had a thought, looked, and there it is. :-/ Will try it tomorrow. Got a busy day and company tonight.

Finally checked manual for media portal and found how to scan for channels. Hooked pc up to cable and tried it: application is not compatible with tv tuner.

So I guess I'll be using the outdated ATI media center for now till I get around to trying out the win7 version. I think I saw somewhere that the card is compatible with Linux but I have NO experience with Linux yet. I've been meaning to try it out in several ways but never got around to it.

I like the look of XBMC. I'll be trying that next. Right now I've discovered a malware on the drive and so I'm doing some extensive scanning/cleaning before I transfer files to new rig.

I didn't find a support list for tv tuners so I'm just gonna wing it and try it out.

New questions:

I'm trying to decide between upgrading to Win7 for the Media Center software or going the Linux route (no experience). Give me your inputs on this.

Also thinking about getting a small SSD but the only benefits I can think of is no noise, small, no heat, and fast OS boot up. Any other benefits to getting a SSD for a HTPC?
