Which Card?

Hi All.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma here...

My current system is:

AMD Althlon X4 @ 3.00GHZ
4GB DDR3 RAM
500 Watt PSU
Crappy card which came with it.

Now, what is the best card I can get without damaging my power supply? Budget: £250 - £300

I have calculated using the eXtreme PS Calculator that I am using roughly 274W.

Being, a Stage Lighting Technician, I am good with electrical work but I'm not that good when it comes to graphics cards.

Thanks in advance,
Josh.

DONOT Use PSU calculators they are very innaccurate.

The most power hungry athlon CPU only use 95w (Proof)

Suppose your HD, Fans, and ram are funning at full throttle your using maybe 75W (which is enough to power a wind tunnel and a dozen HDD[OK maybe not but you get the point])

95 + 75 = 170W

That leaves you with enought wattage to get a 580

It uses 244W when at full load (Proof)

So what kind of PSU do you have? What brand?

There is a chance it is over rated

It doesn't have a name of the manufacturer anywhere on it. The best I can give you is a model number which is: LPJ9-23.

Edit: According to Google, the PSU is made by Linkworld. Never heard of them.

Is it one of these generic PSUs?

If so I wouldn't even trust it to power a fan.

Edit: Ok so it sounds generic...ummm I wouldn't trust a high end card on something like that. You could get a 6870/6950, but generic PSU....ehhh

Ok, what combination of PSU and Graphics Card would you recommend with a £300 budget?

Thanks.

The Antec TruePower 650 or 550 would be plenty, see if you can find that where you live.

That PSU could power a GTX 580 and the rest of your rig without a problem, as for what GPU you want that's up to you.

The TP 650 and 550 are both fairly cheap (price) so that would leave you with quite a bit of change for a high end GPU and maybe a CPU upgrade.
