Q9550 Vs i3 in Gaming - Page 5

I'd take the Q9550. I was hoping to get one cheap before I upgraded to AM3 but it never happened because they are still so expensive!

If you have the CPU already, see if you can get a good 775 board that uses DDR3 and you'll be good for a long while yet smile.gif

I would dissagree mostgames that are out now will use all 4 cores,
mafia 2, metro, bad company, star craft 2 all use all four cores, even hyper threading is utilized, I have a dual mobile set up so when I game I get a luxory of monitor what's going on, and I have to say that a quad core these days would be much better then 2 core with hyperthreading

Second you need 600MHz higher CI5670 to beat Q9550 in Crysis Warhead which is known of being able to use only 2threads and that likes high clocks..

THIS IS real clock per clock comparision between Ci5 650 2C/4Threads and C2Q 4C/4C as both CPU's are @ 3.2GHz and QX9770 is basicly Q9550 running at 3.2GHz..(both 12MB cache as well)..

CHEERS..

I understand that I was just doing it for comparison since the i5 and i3 dual cores are the same except the i5's have higher clocks. It was a way to show how the i3 would compete at higher clocks.

I understand that the Q9550 would beat the i3/i5 at the same clocks, we already covered this. It was to show how much more you would need to overclock the i3 to beat the Q9550 which is only 600Mhz higher. Sure you can clock a Q9550 at 4.0Ghz but you can easily get a i3/i5 at 4.5Ghz+.

I agree with this, to an extent.

In gaming, you likely won't notice much of a a difference between an i3 and a Q9550. Remember, if a game supports 4 cores, it also supports 4 threads, which the i3 has. Also, a common OC for an i3 is around 4.5ghz on air. It's also a 32nm chip, meaning it runs super cool and has a much lower TDP, resulting in good overclocking ability.

I don't intend to tear town the Q9550 at all. That is an absolute beast of a chip. If the Q9550 had HT, it'd be an i7. The Q9550 is head to head with the i5 from what I've seen, so obviously it's a more powerful processor than the i3.

But the question here is "IN GAMING." I believe the i3 is generally a better gaming CPU than the Q9550. Here's my logic:

75 % of games only support dual cores. The i3 will outperform the Q9550 in those games due to it's ability to overclock higher than the Q9550. In the other 25% of games that do support quad cores, the Q9550 will outperform the i3. However, not by much, considering if a game supports 4 cores, it also supports 4 threads, like I said. Add in the higher clock frequency of the i3, and you're looking at a pretty even match.

As for cache, the i3's 4MB will definitely suffice just fine.

^This. The only thing is I think if the i3 had more cache it would be able to beat the Q9550.

Where are those benchmarks in games,as I would like to see them..

I see people talking about what if..,or what would happen.. without any proof..

And once you OC Q9550 to eg. 4GHz eventual higher OC of Ci3 would not make a difference as system would be GPU bottlenecked anyways..

And still games will be more multithreaded in the near future so Ci3 will fall behind even more..

CHEERS..

No, Starcraft 2 does not use 4 threads.

Where's the proof of that statment?

It's a well known fact that HT on 2core CPU does not offer a performance of a 4 phisical cores, like 4c/8threads would do the same job like a real 6Core CPU (maybe a bit better)..

As CPU's with HTT ony have a certain parts doubled and 2thread on the 1 phisical core still use certain parts of a core at the same time and that is what makes 1C/2threads slower (or not productive) as real equivalent 2C/2Threads..

CHEERS..

CHEERS..

The fact that most games DON'T use more then 2 cores/threads! How is no one understanding this yet? Its been common knowledge for the past 2 years now...

EDIT: I don't know any other way to prove it. Maybe I'll try to give intel a call and see if they can make a special i3 for me with more cache. rolleyes.gif
