Sitting at 4.2 on air...worth it to go with W/C?

Thread Starter
Right now my Mugen 2 with push/pull keeps my 955 @4.2GHz with 1.51v at 52* max during prime/linx/ect, 45ish under normal gaming load. I have pushed it to 1.55 and can reach 4.3 but temps increase to 55ish under prime (havn't game tested). Room is at 75*F.

Just wondering if the max voltage for the chip on air is 1.55 and on water is 1.6 (or so I've been told), is it safe to test it on air at 1.6 so long as temps are acceptable just to see if the gain is worth the cost of W/C?

I personally do not think that 1.6v on the 45nm chips is safe, regardless of what people say...
I wouldn't pass the 1.55v mark, 4.2ghz is a solid overclock. You wouldn't benefit much from getting maybe an extra 100-200mhz.

At those temps wouldnt worrie about it thats nice

but if you got the money defo would just becuase the colder the better

I don't think you'll get much higher with that much more voltage. If you do get higher though, you won't see any real performance increase from that little bump in mhz (I'm guessing something like 200mhz-400mhz increase).

75 degree room? That's hot dude.

I find it hard to believe u are hitting 1.51v on air and maxing 52. What are you using for a temp monitor? Max voltage doesn't matter. You can push the chip as far as the motherboard will allow. Your CPU is limited by TJ Max and stability.

At 1.51v, I doubt you could push it more and be 24/7 stable, even on water.

I have a small room, its at 75* during the winter w/Heat and slightly higher during the summer months because I'm cheap with my AC.

I have been running my OC for a solid month 24/7 without any issues. I can do any test you want lol.

I monitor it with multiple programs and all show the same within a *C or so.

Water is a lot more fun than air, you'd probably get 4.4/4.5 stable under 1.6v, but the difference outside of benchmarking isn't going to be much.

You have a solid overclock right now, no reason to drop $100+ easy on a few Hz, pretty much defeats the purpose of going AMD after you start spending that kind of money.
