Not true for me. I'm a huge blizzard fan and have played virtually everything they have ever released. I only quit wow because it was interfering with my school and social life. I miss wow and would still play it if it didn't demand so much damn time.

I don't hold loyalty to any brand or developer. If it is a quality product I will check it out with an open mind.

I was upset that they decided to make ToR a theme park instead of a sandbox. It's the perfect setting for a sandbox type of game.

Still, as I said earlier, BioWare has never failed to deliver, so I have high expectations.

They have NEVER said that.

But lets all be honest here. SWOTR's combat system will be similar to the last 10 "popular" MMOs that have been released, and it all follows the WoW style of combat.

The camera will probably be the same as it is in wow. I bet you it will even follow the same kind of "open world" that WoW does, and even run the same kind of servers.

But how much different can they make the game if they want it to sell? If they make something that is 100% different from WoW (And the ONLY real way to do this is follow the Ultima Online approach with a "sandbox" mmo) it will still draw in a crowd of players sure, but WoW is so smooth and so many people already know how to play that style of MMO, that it will be easy for them to play TOR.

In the MMO business you have 3 kinds of MMOs.

1. A Theme Park MMO (Like WoW, LOTRO and Aion)
2. A Sandbox MMO (Like Ultima Online and Mortal Online)
3. A "casual" MMO (Like Lego Universe)

If you start too far from any of these, you run a HUGE risk of not selling anything, and since Bioware is re-vamping "story" TOR will not work as a sandbox game.

Why? Because - It is VERY, VERY hard to make a good MMO. All the polishing, content, and gameplay required is absolutely stupidly huge compared to single player games (Dragon Age)

My prediction: At best its going to go the guild wars route, never #1 but certainly not bad.. At worst its going to go the WAR route.. Completely crashing and burning while the few devs left try to cling it to life and get people playing.
I wouldn't say that's totally true. Personally, there's a bunch of MMOs I'd like and would play over WoW. But the thing was has going for it is the amount of people. The game doesn't really feel empty. That being said, I agree that it's not going to go #1, I don't think anything will for a very long time. What ToR has going for it is the fact that it's Star Wars.

Ya, before the expansion (and after the final patch before it) my server was basically a ghost land and no one wanted to do anything. There was no reason to play it (and I know a lot of people were off playing other games). After the expansion, there was a queue to log in. Blizzard is obviously aware of this and I'm sure will release some new content just before ToR is released.

That being said, Bioware has never let me down and neither has star wars, I will definately be buying and playing. People need to stop being so hypercritical until they have actually played it,and if they never play it, never comment on it
As in Episodes 4-6 (what some might call the "true" canon)? EVERYTHING after RotS is better. And this game takes place before Episode 1, hence the name "The Old Republic". Everything in all the Old Republics games is a precursor to the movies (but not canon obviously).

I see no signs of that slowing down, with another xpack due in late 2012, the new raids in patches etc etc. Nothing is gonna compare to WoW, evar. I'm sorry, but it wont. Like someone else said as well, the second it was planned to make it a MMO, it failed, its dead. From drawing board to now, waste of work. I dont mean that badly to the devs. But if I was a dev, I wouldn't waste my time working on a MMO, after seeing what WoW is still doing.

Now, im sure if it was the last dev job on earth id take it, but a MMO game would be my last choice/studio to join in this day and age.

One of the reasons why WoW was so huge at launch was because of the fans of the warcraft franchise.

Im pretty sure the number of star wars fans greatly out-numbers the number of warcraft fans.

The main issue now is that wow has been #1 for so long, the sort of people who will put a lot of time, money and effort into an MMO have already done it on WoW. They wont want to give all that up and start again from scratch on a new game.

The main reason for WoW's success is the fact that you can basically run it on a netbook. Low requirements open it up to just about everyone. I personally hate the game, and think other MMO's are far better, but they were brilliant in this aspect of it.

Know how trailers are a bunch of cg not actually in the game? Know how its basically the BEST the company has to promote the game?

If they call THIS promoting the game and THIS a trailer I can't imagine how dull, shallow, unimaginative, and mind numbingly boring the actual gameplay will be..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Ul4j9pYBzU

Oh and while I'm at it RIFT is "more of the same" and nothing new. Black Prophecy beta was absolutely terrible.

MMOs are nothing but disappoints ever since the last wave (AOC, LOTRO, WAR).. Kind of stopped caring and got into console gaming. Every single MMO is promised (and hailed by fanboys) as THE BEST GAME EVER THIS WILL DESTROY EVERYTHING IN ITS PATH IN 2 MONTHS WE'LL HAVE 11 MILLION SUBS AND WE'LL DESTROY BLIZZARDZ1!!11!!! but it never happens.

I've come to accept that WoW (and blizzard) are going to dominate the MMO market AT LEAST for another 2 years and we'll see nothing super imaginative, original, and interesting soon. Only game I'm looking forward to is GW2 simply because I missed out on GW1.
Agreed on all points.

1) The trailer makes it look like you just run into each other with your weapons

2) People will go "oooh lightsabers and force powers" but then their sith lord will get killed by a bounty hunter with pistols and they will be

Additionally makes little sense, lore-wise. The whole thing.

Eh, I used to own jedi with my bounty hunter in SWG. Before they butchered the game, that is.

Were you actually a master BH or just 4 points up to get the missions? I don't think any range character in SWG owned Jedi unless you stacked a melee Mastery too for defences, maybe Fencer.

On the other hand, I used to pretty much own Jedi as a Teras Kasi Master (melee destroyer). I stacked it with fencer I believe and only ever wore a helmet as armour.

I was actually up to Force Adept. This was loooong before NGE and CU, when very few people could become Jedi. Yeah, though, full fledged BH.
