Unlocking Cores? What is this?

Thread Starter
Guys, guys. Look here, at this link, for this processor. And if you look, people are talking about unlocking cores.

Now I dont know much about all of that, but I know there is 2 cores, which is why they call it X2 (right?)
So, if I get this, and then unlock the cores (somehow), then will it become 4 cores, which is the same as this processor?

So basically, if I get that X2 one, and then unlock the cores, will it become the same as that X4 one?

The X2 is named X2 because it has two cores, so, yes, you are right.

X3s and X2s were X4s which didn't pass the quality test and therefore have their cores or cache (Athlon) disabled via the BIOS. You can unlock these disabled cores and cache with the right motherboard and BIOS.

However, there is no guarantee that the cores or cache can be unlocked. Furthermore, processors with unlocked cores usually overclock less high than the ones which passed the quality test.

If you get lucky and the cores are good. I was able to unlock my Phenom II x3 720 into a quad. However, Phenom II cores are often disabled for a reason and therefore will not work when unlocked.

Aw nevermind then.
Also, im reading this image that gives me the parts for a good computer. And for the GPU, all it says is "5770". No company name or anything.
What does that mean? I dont understand.

ATI Radeon HD5770. It's a graphics card, midrange, from the 5 series. About as powerful as the 4870, but allows the use of DX11.

You'd need to crossfire it to get any good performance. I'd go with something like the 5850 or GTX460 if I were you.
