OCZ Fatal1ty 550W PS Not So Good ?

Thread Starter
I have a OCZ Fatal1ty 550W and I occasionally see forum replies that say to stay away from this model because it has poor voltage regulation yet, it has one of the better customer feedback ratings on Newegg. I've had no problem with this supply in my system, it's stable with moderate OC (2.8GHz Athlon Ii x3 425 @ 3.1GHz via FSB OC) and runs cool during gaming (just warm to the touch)

I have a second 460GTX coming this week and as I read the replies in various threads I want to find out if the OCZ Fatal1ty 550W will cut the mustard.

I used the Extreme PS Calculator - it said :

minimum 440W
recommended 490W

Unless I go to a Phenom II x 4 I fail to see why I would need a larger PS.
From what I've read over the years, I hold the belief that many over-buy when it comes to the PS but perhaps I've been mistaken?

I realize current supply plays a major role and the OCZ Fatal1ty is dual rail with 2 x 12V@25A which seems beefy enough for my machine.

I have the following Q's ...

- Is the Extreme calaculator accurate enough so the OCZ Fatal1ty 550W will work well with an Extreme Calc recommendation of 490W ?
http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine

- If the OCZ Fatal1ty 550W won't do well SLI, what PS do you recommmend and why?

thakns for any feedback ...

SeaSonic X650, Super efficient, great voltage regulation, and one of the highest quality PSU's in it's wattage category.

Edit: If you're on a budget you can get the Antec Truepower series

The calculator is a good rough estimate.

My advice for picking a PSU is to go ahead and shell out for a good one. PSUs are probably the ONLY part on a PC that doesn't have to be replaced all the time. So get something with some headroom to grow. Go for somthing like...a Corsair HX 750watt. Then you will have room to OC and upgrade to newer cards.

I cannot speak for the quality of an OCZ PSU, I mearly thought I would post my input above. Goodluck man

The Fatal1ty 550W is an OK unit. It has a 450W capacity at 12V and I think it should work for two GTX 460s since you don't have a high-power CPU. Don't go overclocking anything is all.

upgrade PSU. Seasonic, Corsair AX, HX series, NZXT Hale90 etc. dont skimp.

I was figuring I would need to upgrade the PS but can't for a month or two so good to know the Fatal1ty will be ok for now

Yeah, it'll be fine for awhile.

Save your money up and then get a nice one. Next time you will know

It won't hurt to upgrade. I'm not concerned with your PSU's ability to supply enough power -- that'll be fine -- but rather with its overall quality in terms of components and everything. If you're upgrading it anyway, great, it won't hurt. When the time comes to upgrade, get a good 650W unit and you'll be golden.

You will see alot of cheapo PSU's on newegg with great customer reviews, but that doesn't mean the unit is any good.

Get any Corsair, XFX, SeaSonic, or Antec PSU at 600-650w and you should be good to go. But your PSU will be able to hold on for a bit longer.

Can never go wrong getting a good PS with good ripple suppression and voltage regulation.

It's perfectly fine. I just learned my 500 could handle a 5870 from a "PSU Guru" not long ago so I wouldn't worry.

Possibly the HD69xx cards, though I haven't looked at actual power draw on them yet.
