Dell/Alienware M15x Ordeal

Thread Starter
Hello all,

Just thought I would post this to let you guys know what happened. So I ordered an Alienware M15x laptop from Dell, spec'd it out with an i7, 6gb ram, 500gb hard drive, and the 460M nVidia GPU. It came via UPS and I go to turn it on, the keyboard lit up but nothing displayed on the screen. I looked around on the net and most people said either reseat the LCD cable to the video card or its a defective GPU. I reseated the LCD cable and sure enough no go. By this time I am fed up; I just spent $2100 on this laptop, it should just work... So I call dell, get transferred about 5 times from Customer service > Dell tech support > Alienware tech support > Dell Tech Support > customer service. That was fun.. This whole time I knew I just wanted to return it so I finally got the last customer service guy to realize I'm not dumb and know computers work. He realized that I just wanted a full refund as I stated this should just work and that I'm fed up and just going to go to the store to buy a laptop. The shady thing is, he offered me $75 to keep the laptop? Lol? Trying to bribe me? I said No. He said, "how about $100?" ... lol. Really? I said no and he said okay we are sending you a shipping label via email. So thats it, I am returning it and they will have to sell it at a loss as refurbished. I guess I'm happy that they did finally stand behind their product and give me my money back.. but still that is sort of shady to bribe the customer? In my opinion at least...

Would you guys go back to Dell after this if you were me? I really want a new laptop, I'm thinking an Alienware M11x now though as seeing the defective 15" just seemed like a massive laptop that isnt very portable.

Hope someone in the future finds this post helpful

Alienware support is absolutely pathetic.

We had a (not so tech-savvy) guy bring in his $3000 Alienware desktop to our shop a couple weeks ago. He wanted us to 're-spawn' (format) the system and get the Alienware Control Center working so he could change the colors of the LEDs on the case. Kiddie stuff, yes, but we didn't turn him away.

One of the other techs here had to make a call to Alienware as part of the ticket and they were totally useless. We got bounced from Alienware to Dell then back to Alienware. The client had at one point paid $250 for an 'Alienware schematic', basically a puffed up spec sheet in an Alienware notebook. He had a copy of the original invoice with 'Alienware schematic' listed on it but both Dell and Alienware claimed to have no knowledge of any sort of schematic... Laughably pathetic.

Dell on it's own is a fantastic company (at least at the business/enterprise level). Alienware needs to disappear and never return...

BTW: $3000 bought this guy an i7 930, 6GB ValuRAM, 5850, 1TB HDD and Corsair H50. Oh and of course an Alienware-branded monitor, keyboard and mouse. Some people are just doh.gif

Yikes ... thanks for sharing that experience haha. It's really too bad too because I really like the way the Alienware laptops look, they look cool. But yeah its just all overpriced unfortunately.

And lol, i7 930, cool; 6GB ValuRAM ?? REALLY?! Lol.... Computers take some intelligence to use and sadly not all people possess it.

Thats why I never recommend dell for consumers. Business support is amazing. However, unless you opt to buy pro support as a consumer, which is insanely expensive for a single computer, you will always talk to tech support over seas. Pro support is enterprise level support based in Round Rock Texas and Oklahoma City Oklahoma.

Will people ever learn that Alienware doesn't work, especially since their service is terrible
