Didn't really know where to put this, but

I figured since I intend to use an intel CPU (microcenter for the win!) here would probably work best!

I was just wondering if there was a 'best time' to build a computer. More specifically when will I not go 'Darn! That new shiny part just came out!' or 'Darn! That just dropped $100!'.

The earliest I could start my build is May, latest being early August (but even that would be cutting it close, and wouldn't be able to enjoy the computer over the summer).

Sorry if this is a nooby (or even stupid ) question. Just got a lot of time to think about my first build as I wait for my semester of college to be done!

Build when you can, and don't look back. There really is no 'good' time to buy, they will always get cheaper no matter what. I would wait a while for Sandy bridge to come down, just in case.

Well I have to wait until May regardless

I'm not building my first computer in a dorm room

well what kind of a budget were you looking at? The next two big things coming out are the AMD bulldozer and the Intel LGA2011 as far as processors go. For graphics I don't think Nvidia has anything coming up anytime soon (But who knows) and AMD might have some cards coming out (please don't quote me on this).

When I built my system I was told to wait for the next set of nvidia cards to come out (fermi series) but I decided not to and I'm glad I didn't wait because they were delayed quite a while.

Intel already came out and basically said SB is not meant for enthusiasts so I'm personally expecting something big from LGA2011.

Budget is by no means set in stone as I don't know how much I'll make working this semester or if I'll get the job (probably will, but don't want to count on it). I am spending upwards $400 on my monitor/keyboard/mouse (guesstimation looking for very specific things in my monitor , deckmaster keyboard and razer death adder mouse). So I could see my budget being +/- $1000. However if I have to go over to really future proof my PC or it is something ESSENTIAL I could probably convince myself to spend more.

Build the best you can afford now and let it be. As soon as you purchase a part, a better-cheaper-shinier version of it will come out. Just update when you can afford again. I don't think there is ever a "best" time other than now

Sounding like good advice! Just wanted to make sure, because this build will need to last me a good long time!

IMO, best time would be just after the newest stuff has came out (ie now would be great time to build). Because if you got the dough, you can go for the latest and greatest (ie, Sandy Bridge) and be protected for a few months before you get outdated. Or if you don't got the dough or looking for more value, you can get the just-got-outdated stuff (ie 1st gen Core i7) since ppl/store will be doing some clearance and you can get those for cheaper.

Remember around middle of this year (May to Aug) is when Sandy Bridge will be getting old and Ivy Bridge will be just coming around the corner so....

Trust me, if I could order all the parts now and build it next week I would, but I don't feel comfortable with my schools mail people handling that, no room to actually build it, and I am in the middle of no where USA, if I screw up there is no one to help me out May is the absolutely earliest unfortunately

So maybe a nice Ivy Bridge or Bulldozer since they'll be new

AH yeah. Bulldozer should be coming soon, and Ivy Bridge may be a bit later. But yes, either way this year will be very good interms of new technology. Not to mention AMD will be rolling out their HD7000 cards (most likely) and maybe NVIDIA will have another surprise for us up their sleeve.
