Video editing build

Thread Starter
Ok, so I would like to help my friend (he asked for my help) build a machine for home / family video editing, probably using Sony Vegas Pro 10. I don’t know if I will overclock at all, as I don’t generally have enough time to make sure it is stable b4 it is in full use. Hopefully I will have the opportunity to try to get it to 4.2-4.4, but time will be my enemy. Also it will be my first ssd install and my head is kind of swimming with questions. I have been researching video editing builds and the sweet spot seems to be the os on an ssd. A raid0 array for storage, and some kind of backup.

P8P67 Pro / i7-2600k / Hyper 212 cooler
Corsair 850w tx Pwr Supply
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 1600 (4 x 4gb) or G.Skill Sniper or Corsair Vengeance / all 9-9-9-24 @ 1.5v
EVGA GTX 470
OCZ Vertex 2 120gb ssd sata2 for os Win7 64 home premium
2 WD Black 640’s sata3 in raid 0 for storage / 1 WD Black 1tb for backup
LG 10x Blu-ray burner and Sony optiarc DVD burner w/ lightscribe
CM Elite 430 case
Budget: under $2k / all will be from the Egg

Any input as to the build especially memory would be welcomed by me, but please give your reasons for any changes.

Do 4x 640gb's with raid 0+1, that way redundancy is automatic. Your memory choice looks great, for editing you don't even need high speeds, just capacity.
Also, the SSD is a great choice. Win7 has excellent options for customising the library and folder locations etc to put videos on the hdd by default.

Oh, like the poster above said, for video editing, moar memory = better... i have 12gb of the vengeance ram and i love it... however, keep in mind that the heat spreaders on those are quite big... even to point of saying massive. any decent sized cpu cooler will NOT be able to fit properly. the only cooler i know that fits it properly would be the thermalright archon... that has plenty of room to spare between itself and the ram. stick another ty-140 fan on it, and it will be unbeatable...

Furthermore, if your friend doesn't plan on any gaming, i think the 470 is a bit overkill... a 460 would do him good. also, because this is a rig that is going to be under load for a considerable amount of time, (i.e. when rendering the final project), you should consider a spacious case to allow good air flow. The last thing you need is your computer overheating halfway through your rendering process... this is specially true if its O.C'd

try a full tower case, something like the haf 932 or 922 (i guess i'm biased cause i have the 932 myself, but still....). really, any case that has plenty of room inside and large fans are a must... a fan controller would be a bonus, but its not necessary

cheers

A 470 is a bit of overkill for a video editing PC. I would suggest getting something like a 5750 or 450 and with the money you saved get a bigger SSD or throw two SSD's into RAID 0. Replace the WD black with a spinpoint F3, it's faster and less expensive. You're not going to need 16GB's of ram for this rig, even 8GB's will be a bit of overkill. Here is a nice 8GB kit:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231416

The main reason you really shouldn't have 16GB's (4x4GB) is because will all the slots filled you are really going to be stressing your IMC which is going to make it much harder to overclock.

Thanks for the input, would love to do that but my experience and knowledge does not include installing Raid 0+1 across multiple chips/controllers. Call me ignorant, but in general if things are truly backwards compatible on new MB's as advertised then why not make all ports sata3 and with no ide header, why not ad more ports? Just a thought.

This was my thought also but it appears that video editing software in the future will be taking advantage of graphic cards so we are trying to build this with those type of things in mind. Also will be running 2 monitors with this build. And who knows, I might have to check out "Crysis" on this b4 I give it to him!

I am happy to go with 8gb, but having no real world experience with video editing, idk what actual usage is going to be. Having said that, i guess we could go with 8gb now and 8gb later if needed.
Again thanks to all for your input.

You should look at a GTX 460 ( or ATI equivalent ), 750W PSU and maybe use a H50 for CPU Cooling.

I think even a 460 is overkill for this build. A 450 should get the job done nicely.
