What happens if...

you shut down, power off, reset, or pull the plug from a computer while Windows is updating before shutdown?

I just told my sigrig to shut down, and it took 2 seconds to install updates 1 through 56, but it's take 25 minutes now to do update 57, and it's still not finished.. What happens if I yank the power?

look for hard drive activity. if the light is on or blinking a lot just let it go. if the light is off or blinks quickly like once every 10 seconds then pull the plug once you find a pattern and can be sure the hdd won't be accessed during the time when you pull it.

There is a possibility that it could corrupt the data, and honestly I wouldn't pull the power.

I'd say, give it an hour, and if it's not done then; hold down the power, and do a hard reboot. I've done it a few times on old laptops, and there fine; but there is always the possibility of corrupting the data that is being written, thus corrupting your windows installation.

Got tired of waiting and powered off. Next time computer started, it said it failed to install updates and was reverting. Eh.

Be happy that it didn't corrupt anything

But that's odd, then again...I've had it happen to me multiple times.

Either way, it should re-download again and try again the next time you shut down, hopefully next time it works.

Windows can be very picky when it comes to updates. If you feel like a risk, then do it. Don't cry if you have to reinstall windows due to corruption.

Now, if it's 1 update, you could get away with it, but if you have like alot of updates updating alot of things in the OS, then you risk corruption. just leave it, make a cup of tea or something or have a nap..

Already on SP1 >.> But I NEVER pull the plug on an update. Be patient and wait. Go read a book, watch TV, play a game, draw, something till it is done.

Another go at it worked fine, with no issues. So something went wrong last time.
