Display Drivers Crash Constantly

Thread Starter
Hello,

First let me just say I am posting this on behalf of someone. I'm going to do my best to get everything right. Something just has to be done because this is getting to be a issue.

System:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3.16GHz (stock speeds)
Mobo: Micro-Star International P7N Diamond BIOS version 1.3
RAM: OCZ Platinum OCZ2P10664GK DDR2 1066 4GBx2 (8GB total) 5-5-5-18-24-2T. This seems to be under clocked to DDR2 800 according to CPU-Z
Graphics: 2x BFG Tech BFGE98512GTXPOCE GeForce 9800 GTX+ They are SLIed. Driver version 8.17.12.5896
OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Disc Drive LITE-ON DVD drive with lightscribe
HDD Seagate Barracude 7200 RPM 750GB
CPU Cooler ZALMAN CNPS9700 LED 110mm 2 Ball CPU Cooler
PSUCORSAIR HX Series CMPSU-1000HX 1000W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
Case TowerThermaltake Armor+MX VH8000BWS Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

That should be it for hardware. If you need any more please say.

The system is 2 years old and has been working fine up till about a few weeks ago.

The system is having a lot of display driver crashes. The screen will turn black and a message will pop up saying that the display drivers crashed. It has gotten to the point where it will BSOD. The BSODs say that the display drivers failed to initialize.

This happens at any time. You can be in a word document, browsing the web, or playing a game and it will do it. It's getting to the point where stuff is getting corrupted (such as files that were in use when it crashes or BSODs) and gets lost or doesn't work.

He has tried installing previous drivers and current drivers which doesn't seem to fix the issue.

He is a heavy gamer and I know he's been having issues with FallOut New Vegas.

I will try to answer as much as I can (or get him to post).

TIA for the help!

Try one card at a time.
One of them might be dying.

Try to unplug any unnecessary items such as
1 ram stick
1 GPU
unplug any unnecessary cooling fans
That should help you narrow it down

Thanks for the speedy reply!

Will recommend this to him. It's a pretty grim prognosis though if it is a dying card. Though it does make sense. The system has been fine up till maybe mid/end of December.

Do you guys think there is any other way this is driver related or software related over hardware?

Hey guys! So we tried swapping out the graphics card and the problem still persists. Any other ideas?

On one or both?
Also, run Memtest86+.

* you could try a clean boot. go to start > run > (type in ) MSCONFIG and go to startup and disable all then go to SERVICES and put a tick in the box that says HIDE ALL MICROSOFT SERVICES then DISABLE the rest then reboot and try the game again, IF that did not work then you could try a Driver update as the one you are using seems a bit dated now the 266.58 drivers are available at www.nvidia.com Plus check sound drivers as they can be problematic to .Also What windows system are you using?

It could be a whole manner of things but to rule out the operating system and drivers i would shove in a spare hard drive and reinstall windows on that then all the latest drivers then just the game you play that causes the crash and see if it still does it, then you will know if it is hardware or software, (if you have trouble installing windows with lots of crashing then check RAM with MEMTEST86+ . Free download - burn to disk and start machine to that disk and watch it go, You will see errors in RED etc. if it gets through more than 5 passes then it is pretty sure its not ram issue)

I hope this helps

Unfortunately we've ran into more problems.

The computer is refusing the boot into windows. The only way to get it into windows is to reset the BIOS but when you power down the computer it won't go into windows.

From my experience with this it had to do with the RAM. We did run MemTest 86+ on the sticks and it can't find anything wrong with them.

The OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Next time you are able to get into the OS run 'chkdsk C: /r' from a command prompt with administrative privileges.

Occasionally BSOD's will cause a non-boot scenario due to disk errors.
